Once upon a time a summer vacation would be the cause for so much excitement taking place among families before commencing on their journey regardless of where they were bound for, holidays abroad even more so because of the three SSS to be lavished up on arrival, those being sun sea and sand. However this has all changed because of the way the world is today - where we now have four SSSS, the fourth representing safety.

Because of the society we live in - parents are forced to carry more baggage along with their children’s beach sandals and bathing costumes – excess luggage “worry".

Safety highlights on the three SSS before the fourth S is revealed when caring for children abroad.

1 The sun is a major threat to us all. (Health risk) Precautions should be taken to protect the skin from the damaging UV rays. Children need to be smothered from head to toe in a total sun block. Make sure the kiddies wear sun hats, stop dehydration by drinking plenty of fluids. Dad should wear a bandana if hats are not his thing; head wear for mums come in various sorts from wide brimmed floppy hats, scarves or straw boaters. Skin cancer is one type of cancer killing more and more people than you could ever imagine all because they chose to ignore the first S.

2 The sea is an inviting expanse of water that attracts people like a magnet i.e. wanting to swim or participate in water sports. The sea is dangerous “end of story". Never swim when the red flag is flying or involve your self in water sports unless under the supervision of an expert. Remember to top up on sun cream because submerging in and out of the water may remove the first layer. Wear sandals when paddling for fear of standing on a sea urchin.

3 The sand is for building sand castles and twiddling in-between the toes, however if it is swallowed by a young child it can be very dangerous. Another important issue on sand is to keep feet covered, objects buried beneath not visible to the eye can cause serious injury if stood on. Buried dangers can be glass or other sharp objects left by careless tourists or swept in with the sea.

The fourth S sun sea sand and safety – Child abduction is becoming more and more common in foreign countries. One story of late has a child taken from her holiday apartment as she slept. (Madeleine McCann)

Safety tips – Keep your child in sight at all times, never leave children alone or unsupervised round swimming pools even though other adults are present. In crowded busy streets or market places have your toddler wear reins. Never let your children wander off on the holiday complex - no matter how much you believe it is a safe environment. If you have a balcony, remove the furniture in your absence. Balcony tables and chairs become a climbing frame for the curious child. If you have tea or coffee making facilities in your hotel room keep out of arms reach, children tied to one room for a long period of time (while you bathe) tend to get bored quickly and turn their attention to playing or touching gadgets that can cause them serious injury.

Happy holidays all because you followed the four SSSS for a safe summer vacation
