Tampa, FL - Thousands turn out April 29th on the grounds of Raymond James Stadium for 98 Rockfest 2007 in Tampa. This festival replaced the 3 day long Livestock Festival in Zypherhills that had been held for the last 15 years. 98 Rock packed a weekends worth of talent into a single Sunday afternoon. The lineup included: Dropping Daylight, Blackstone Cherry, Bullet FM Valenite, Saliva, Daughtry, Puddle of Mudd, Chevelle, Papa Roach, Buckcherry, Three Days Grace and Hinder. The crowd was treated to a barrage of hit after hit, all day long, constantly switching between two main stages.
After the show, I met up with Jacoby Shaddix (Vocals) from Papa Roach. Papa Roach has infested the mainstream alternative music scene for years. Their latest release " The Paramour Sessions" features two major hits "...To Be Loved", and "Forever".
The band started in 1993 when Shaddix, and the drummer Dave Buckner met on the Vacaville High School football field in northern California. Their first gig was their school's talent show which they didn't win. Over the next few years the band went through many changes and produced several self release albums. It wasn't until 2000 when they signed with Dreamworks Records that the band gained national attention with their album "Infest". It sold over 30,000 copies the first week and gained national radio play with their single "Last Resort". The band performed on the mainstage at Ozzfest in both the US and UK and gained world wide acclaim. Papa Roac h went on to release "Lovehatetragedy" in 2002, and "Getting Away With Murder" in 2003 which has gone platinum. The band spent much of the following year on tour both in the US and overseas.
Their latest effort "the Paramour Sessions", takes it's name from theParamour Mansion, located at Silver Lake, Los Angeles, California where the band recorded it. The first single "...To Be Loved" has a rap rock sound with pop-punk influences and gained enormous air-play world wide. The second single release "Forever" has catapulted the band into the mainstream rock scene, and illustrates how the bands sound has matured and progressed over the years. The song has gained appeal across a large audience, and the lyrics will stike a chord with anyone who has had to let go of a true love...
The band's stage performance is stellar... It's well choreographed, and theatrical. Shaddix had the crowd rocking, with hands in the air, the entire show in the hot Florida sun. He moved across the stage to reach the entire audience, and at one point launched himself into the crowd and embraced the fans. Then he ran up on stage, grabbed the cooler, and tossed ice water all over the crowd... You could see the steam rise... The whole band just looked like they were having a lot of fun out there. After the show Shaddix came out and took pictures and signed autographs. "This is what I live for... I Love this shit" he said. I think this band is just getting started... Look for much more from these guys...
