The American Dental Association has released a report saying that gummy vitamins have now been found to cause cavities.

Apparently the sugary substance that coats the vitamin is not good for children’s teeth and can cause cavities. The Association suggests that parents who provide the gummy vitamins, take some precautions to cut down on cavities.

The association asks that parents give the vitamins to the kids before bed and then immediately brush the kids teeth afterwards. This will protect against cavities.

The association does admit that not all kids will get cavities from the vitamins.

I always think these reports are interesting. As a parent, I always try to get my kids to eat healthy, take vitamins, etc. I have a six-year-old that has never liked vitamins. Not the gummy, gum or any kind. Every time, he eats one he acts as if he is going to die from it. We have tried everything. That being said, these studies make me laugh. It is the only response I allow myself to have.

My kid drinks juice boxes like they are going out of style. He plays soccer and usually downs at least a liter of Gatorade between practices and games every week. He has a sweet tooth despite the amount of nagging he hears about it.

I keep him away from sodas-none in the house. I try to feed from all the food groups. I control portion sizes, but the point I am trying to make is it seems even when we have the best intentions, there is always an effect.

I am sure many parents use the gummy vitamins because they gave up trying to get down the other vitamins. Who doesn’t want their kid to be healthy? Only now to find out that they cause cavities-it seems the stress of being a parent is never ending.

I don’t think in the old days, parents worried as much as they do today. Of course, they didn’t have report after report of things having a negative effect on kids of today. Like I said, I just have to laugh or otherwise I would spend the day crying on the effect my parenting is having on my child!

Now, however, you are informed about the dangers associated with gummy vitamins. Happy parenting knowing one more study and another way to cause harm to your child.
