Binaural beats are where two slightly different tones are played, one into
each ear. Your brain tries to resolve the difference between the beats and this
is where their power lies.
Before you start searching for free binaural beats, you need to know
what you are looking for. They can be used for different purposes, so it's
useful to know the differences before you start your search.
There are different binaural beat frequencies that are in common use:
- Delta state. When your brain is in deep sleep, running at around 4Hz.
- Theta state. Deep meditation is usually placed in this range of around 4 to
7 Hz.
- Alpha state. Between 7 and 13 Hz. This is a kind of light daydream state and
is a nice, relaxing place to be. A lot of people use this to enhance their
creativity.
- Beta state. 13 to 40 Hz. Here, your brain is quite active.
- Gamma state. Above 40 Hz. Your brain is buzzing and may even literally hurt.
Once you know the state you are looking to recreate, then your search
can begin. Likely with your favorite search engine.
Make sure that any binaural beat you use - whether it's free or paid for -
has been tested. You're messing with your brain on this and whilst you can
always stop listening, it's best to make sure that the program you're listening
to has been checked and tested on others first.
Then decide whether you want to listen to the binaural beats "raw" or whether
you'd prefer them to have a backing track to mask them as far as your conscious
brain is concerned. Raw binaural beats can be quite intrusive, so it's often
best to play them over natural sounds, such as rainfall or forest noises.
