Question: If you have blasphemed the Holy Spirit, does it matter if you're sorry?
Answer: The Bible tells us that if we blaspheme the Holy Spirit, we will not be forgiven (Luke 12:10).
Now what is blaspheming? The Webster's Dictionary defines it as
to speak of or address with impious irreverence; to revile; abuse.
For a long time, I struggled with this. The devil told me that I
had blasphemed the Holy Spirit. He accused me of doing it
accidentally and insisted that I was doomed.
My instructors at one Christian school taught us that when Amy Grant
moved her music to the mainstream pop charts, she blasphemed the Holy
Spirit.
I heard that if we grieve the Holy Spirit in any way, we have committed the unpardonable sin.
Speaking of the Holy Spirit or being involved with any thing that had to do with Him remained off-limits in my book.
Who is the Holy Spirit?
Let's say we want to turn on a light. We instruct our son to turn
it on because he is closer to it. He flips the switch.
The same principle is true in the Godhead. God is the person who
gives the order. Jesus fulfills the order and the Holy Spirit is
the power that causes the order to be fulfilled just like the
electricity makes the light turn on.
After Jesus ascended into Heaven, He left the Holy Spirit with
us. The Holy Spirit is to be our Comforter, to be our Helper, to
be our Counselor.
The Holy Spirit is supposed to be our friend and not our enemy.
He is not Someone to be afraid of nor should we cut Him out of our
lives. He is a valuable asset to us.
The controversy concerning the Holy Spirit stems from wrong teaching
about the baptism of the Holy Spirit with the evidence of speaking in
tongues.
Some believe it is of the devil. Others believe it doesn't exist
today. Yet others believe those who speak in tongues are crazy.
Let's set aside the controversy and deal with who the Holy Spirit is and how He is important to our lives as Believers.
The Holy Spirit is the Best Friend that we can have. He knows all
things and is willing to teach us all things. He wants to be our
tutor in whatever we need to learn.
For instance, let's say our talents are creative, such as writing,
painting or music. In order to sell our pieces, we must learn how
to market. The Holy Spirit can teach us how to market our
pieces. The Holy Spirit can give us witty ideas on how to prosper
our business.
Let's say, we need to know how to do a particular skill for our job, the Holy Spirit can teach us.
He can also bring all things to our remembrance. Most of us
forget information that we don't use. If we ask Him, the Holy
Spirit can bring those things that we once knew to our
remembrance. But it must already be in us in order for the Holy
Spirit to bring it to our remembrance.
It is like a well. We have to put a bucket down in the well, and
if there is water down there, it will come up. If there isn't, it
won't.
When we are in distress, when we are discouraged, the Holy Spirit will comfort us.
The Holy Spirit is a source of encouragement, a source of correction, a
source of life and love. He is on our side, trying to coach us
into being the best that we can be.
It is only through the Holy Spirit that the gifts of the Spirit are
deposited in us, but without the Holy Spirit's help, we cannot activate
them.
The Holy Spirit is our Heavenly Coach, who can lead us into all truth,
can teach us all things, can comfort us, encourage us, love on us and
be there when we need Him. He is there whenever we are in
trouble, and even when we aren't.
What about the unpardonable sin? It is a rejection of the Holy
Spirit. It is turning our back on God, Jesus and the Holy Spirit.
Remember I struggled with whether I had committed the unpardonable sin?
One morning, I listened to Casey Treat's broadcast, and he said, "If
you are worried about committing the unpardonable sin, then you
haven't."
That set me free right there. He went onto explain that if one
commits blasphemy against the Holy Spirit, if they turn their backs
totally on the Gospel and reject it, then they are so hard-hearted that
they wouldn't repent in the first place. And they cannot receive
forgiveness if they don't repent.
If we are worried about committing the unpardonable sin, we
haven't. If it upsets us not to have our sins forgiven, that is a
good indication that we are not hard-hearted. We are still pliable
toward the things of God.
It is only when we harden our hearts toward God, when we turn our back
on the ways of God that we must worry about the unpardonable sin.
However, by the time, a person gets to that point, forgiveness is the last thing on his mind.
The Holy Spirit is our Friend. He is not someone to be
feared. He can be an useful resource when we need to learn
something or need the truth on a matter.
He is a source of comfort when we are grieving or in pain. A
sense of direction when we are lost. Encouragement when we are
discouraged.
He is the Best Friend you will ever have or need. Get to know Him today.
