The 20th century , more than any other, had been one of staggering transformation. Our population had mushroomed by almost 200 million since 1900.
Passenger travel zoomed from the horse to the supersonic. Computers accomplish in hours what took turn-of-the-century factory crews days. And the foods we've eaten as well as how we entertain have taken an equally remarkable journey.
The journey through yesterday is entertaining. Although customs and conventions have changed in response to a changing world you may note that as Cole Porter said: “ Everything Old is New Again ."
AHalloweenGhost Party Circa 1932
Everyone loves a ghost party, whether he is fourteen or ninety. The invitations may be decorated with skull and crossbones and instruct the guests to come in ghostly garb.
Have the room darkened, and as the guests that enter should be greeted with a ghostly handclasp; a wet glove filled with sand gives the desired effect.
On the hearth bubbles a witch's caldron (made from a cooking pot), stirred by a crone who sings the incantation from Macbeth as she tosses in toy snakes, frogs, and so forth.
She also draws out the fortunes for the curious.
The buffet supper table for a ghost party may be covered with a black paper cloth on which white ghosts are pasted. The centerpiece might be a witch's caldron a black pot with a grinning face chalked on one side), filled with tiny dangling ghosts made from pipe cleaners, which act as favors. White tapers stuck in black bottles furnish the only light.
