Animal Crossing is a video game for people who like to pull weeds, go fishing, catch bugs, and run errands for other people, so if this sounds like you, you'll like this game. You don’t really have to do these things, but pulling weeds makes your town look better, fishing makes you money if you sell the fish, and if you run errands, the animals may give you something. You get into debt by buying a house. Your goal is to pay off all your debt and meet new animals because they will be your friends for that town. You can't really win this game, but you go through the seasons with real life. The game teaches kids a sense of responsibility of their town and home.

When you start Animal Crossing, you’re on a train, and someone asks to sit next to you. The questions she asks you determine what town you go to, whether you are a boy or girl (but you are always human), and what the time is.

You get off the train, and Tom Nook (the store owner and house seller) takes you to the houses and asks you which one you want. There are only four houses to choose from. You tell him which house you want and pay him 1,000 bells. (Bells are like money.) He says it's not enough, and you're in debt. You can pay off your debt by helping your townsfolk (which are animals). When you pay off your debt, you can extend your house.

Like most games, there are built in "cheats" in Animal Crossing. For instance, if you bury a shovel in a golden spot (a place that looks like it's shining), when you come back later a full grown tree is in that spot. If you shake it a golden shovel will fall out.
