An under bust corset or waist cincher was also dubbed the ribbon corset. It was first used in the 1860’s and remained popular until the very early 1900’s. It is a short corset designed to fit around the waist only but it laces up the back like other corsets do. It almost appears to be nothing more than a wide belt and the purpose of it is to cinch the waist. Some women used to wear it to bed while they slept but many also wore them under their dresses.
Then the under bust corset vanished completely until Dior brought it back in 1947. It stuck around for a little while mainly because of the style of the nipped in waist that was popular at that time but the under bust corset did not remain a hit for long. It was not until 1985 that it returned again and this time it made an impact and has been somewhat popular ever since.
Some used the under bust corset for purposes of applying force to the waist for aesthetic reasons and while it did have its benefit at the time, that practice is now outdated for most. It was thought that forcing postural support along with pressure to the hips and sacroiliac joints did contribute to good health. After childbirth the pelvic area weakens and the under bust corset was thought to assist in strengthening those muscles.
It was also not uncommon for men to wear a waist corset for the very same reasons. They would wear them under clothes for support in the mid section. Prince Albert wore them regularly and that set the path for acceptance because if the Price could wear them then any man could too. To this day it is very common for men to wear under bust corset in many different ways as well as for various purposes. They may wear them for posture but they can also be worn outside of a tuxedo and take on the purpose of a cummerbund.
Today, corsets are hotter than ever, including the under bust corset. Women are ordering them like crazy and keeping all of the corset makers very busy. Mainly, women no longer want to keep their corset a private affair, rather they choose to wear them as outer wear and it is completely acceptable to do so. There is still something about the corset, regardless of the style, that reflects sex appeal and confidence. Many women wear them over a blouse with a pair of pants or a skirt with a business jacket over it. It will definitely turn some heads to say the least.
Corsets and under bust corset are back in style and this time they are here to stay. They are not only sexy but also display a symbol of femininity. Remember, in addition to everything, the real purpose that under bust corset serve is to slim the waist and flatter the figure. Now corsets of all styles are out in the open, so to speak, and people just love them, men and women alike.
