A strand of fine pearl necklace is always a romantic gift for her. Then how to choose a perfect pearl necklace? Here are some tips:

There are generally two kinds of cultured pearls: Saltwater cultured pearls - pearls that grow in ocean water, including Akoya pearls, black Tahitian pearls and golden South Sea pearls. Saltwater pearls are most popular and luxurious pearls in the world for their roundness beauty and appealing high luster. Saltwater pearls are more costly than freshwater pearls.

Freshwater cultured pearls - pearls that grow in rivers and lakes. Freshwater pearls come in a variety of shapes and colors.

Like Diamonds(have 4C's to determine quality), pearls have six criteria for determining their quality and value: luster, nacre, surface, color, shape, size and matching . The educated buyer decides which of these criteria are most important.

Pearls Nacre: When buying cultured pearl jewelry, first consider pearls' nacre thickness. Pearls with nacre thickness over 0.4mm are highly recommended. Nacre is the coating that a pearl oyster produces to cover pearl nucleus, it is the key to how long pearls last.

Pearls Luster and Surface: A strand of pearl necklace with high luster pearls, mirror finish and clean surfaces is most desirable and valuable.

Pearls Color: It is a personal choice. Consider to buy pearl necklaces with color that would coordinate your clothing.

Pearls Size: Pearls size affects prices dramatically, particularly above 7mm. People usually buy the largest pearls they can afford.

Pearls Shape: Round pearls are most desirable and valuable.

Pearls Matching: For a pearl necklace or pearl bracelet, matching refers to matches in pearl roundness, size, luster, surface smoothness and color. It is time consuming to make a well matched pearl necklace and therefore it deserves a top price.

After you have decided the type, color, size and quality of pearls, think about your budget. It is time to shop around and find a perfect pearl necklace for her!
