A new movie set to come out on Dec. 7 and stars Nicole Kidman is causing quite a stir among Christians in the United States. I received an email just this week alerting me to the content of the new movie and the dangers it poses for my kids.

I usually am pretty open-minded when it comes to requests for boycotts, except when it comes to my kids. Kids lack the spiritual gift of discernment for the most part and as a parent, it is my job to ensure my child’s mind stays as pure as possible in this society.

So what is the big deal about this movie? It has Nicole Kidman in it so it will receive quite a bit of publicity. With Kidman being a self-professed catholic, you would think that it couldn’t be that bad, right? Unfortunately, stars today do not pick roles based on moral values but instead of monetary values. But that is a whole other story.

The main reason this movie is so dangerous is-it is based on the first book of a trilogy by Philip Pullman, an atheist out of England. I know what you are thinking," so what, he is an atheist-writing and religious beliefs are separate." Unfortunately, in this case it is not.

Also, remember as a Christian parent, it is our duty to protect our kids’ minds. The purpose of this trilogy for Pullman was to be the anti-Narnia or anti-C.S. Lewis. He has stated publicly that his goal is to “kill God in the minds of children."

He has written 3 books that all promote atheism, and the movie depicts his first book (which is the more watered-down of the 3).  His goal is that you see the movie and then that your kids want his trilogy for Christmas and then it really gets offensive in the second two books.  But just to give you a snippet of what is in Pullman’s books: an ex-nun calling Christianity a convincing mistake, two characters representing Adam & Eve kill God (called YAHWEH) in the end, and there’s a story about castration & female circumcision. He stated in a 2003 interview that his books are about killing God.

The Golden Compass is expected to be advertised as a fun, family holiday movie. The advertising will be targeted towards children. For more information on Pullman or the email, please visit Snopes.com at http://snopes.com/politics/religion/compass.asp

The movie is based on Pullman’s first book in the trilogy called Northern Lights. The production company itself sees issues with the content of the books and decided to water down the movie. Accodring to Wikipedia, Several key themes of the novels, the rejection of organized religion and the abuse of power in a fictionalized Catholic Church, are to be diluted in the adaptation. Director Weitz said "in the books the Magisterium is a version of the Catholic Church gone wildly astray from its roots" but that the organization portrayed in his film would not directly match that of Pullman's books. In an attempt to avoid a religious backlash, the Magisterium will instead be a critique of all dogmatic organizations. Weitz said that New Line Cinema had feared the story's perceived anti-religious themes would make the film financially unviable in the US, and so religion and God will not be referenced directly.

The problem with this is that the books still contain that material. The writer is hoping that the movie will spark kids to want to read the books and by the third book, he will have them hooked in atheistic thoughts. As a parent, this is something I want to guard against. As someone who went to a very liberal college, I understand some view this type of exposure as being a good thing for kids to experience so that they can defend their faith easier. I say that sheltering them at a time when they are questioning anyway is not a bad thing.

We are here to protect our kids and their minds. Garbage in can sometimes mean Garbage out. I, for one, will be one of those that boycott this film. Hollywood has to wake up at some point and realize that the trash they are spewing is not acceptable for families. The only way they will do so it if we as families stop supporting their ideologies. After all, they hope to make over $205 million on this anti-Christian movie.

I am not saying that you should not do what you think is right. I would never tell anyone what is right for them. But *everything* your children see and hear affects them in some way or other and you can not know what is going on in their little minds. Don't take them to see it and don't discuss it with them before and afterwards. But they will still hear about it from their friends and who knows what their friends will tell them about it.

Thanks for the comment!

It can sometimes be hard to monitor what your children see and hear. And we certainly can't control what their friends say, which is all the more reason for us to provide a good example when it comes to deciding what is good information and what is bad.

I will tell my children in advance about Satan and reinforce and show them the love of God and its importance in how they treat people. Then I will point out that this movie is from Satan and that it is designed to confuse and cause corruption in their generation. They must continue to study God's word and be the salt/light of a corrupt and wicked world. HOWEVER, financially this movie's staff WILL NOT benefit from my pocketbook. We will use it as an example of the benefits of being a lover of God and NOT a follower of man.

If i had children and they wanted to see this movie i would let them because like the director said he changed the organization that represtented a crazed catholic church into an organization that represents all dogmatic organizations. But i agree that the books would be harmful and that the author is wrong but you know he is entitled to his opinion and his own religion but i would not let my kids read his book because of what they represent. I agree that the books were designed to corrupt this generation and turn them away from God but the movie is about adventure and standing up in your beliefs its just BASED on the book not an exerpt from it or a summary like harry potter. Even though im christian you must know that there are people who discourage from letting their children see the naria movies because its a translation of jesus and his apostles but in a more child-like view. Im not trying to support them or trying to get money into the movie staffs' pockets but this movie is not trying to corrupt our children it is the books. i hope more people see that

I remember just before and during the release of the first Harry Potter movie there was considerable contraversy about the Harry Potter movies/books supposedly promoting witchcraft to children.

Seriously?!?

As for Nicole Kidman here's what she had to say about this film "the Catholic Church is part of my essence. I wouldn't be able to do this film if I thought it were at all anti-Catholic."

Based on your article I've been to the authors website, read the synopsis of the film and read various other articles and opinions pro and con. I'm a firm believe in making up my own mind rather than jumping on the band wagon based on a spam email.

I think this is a storm in a teacup and will blow over just like Harry Potter did. I fully intend to go along and see what the fuss is about.

P.S. Here's a quote from the Catholic Herald regarding Pullman's novels: "worthy of the bonfire". Just what we need, another round of book burnings.

I actually agree that the books are worthy of the bonfire. . . There comes a point in your life where you have to take a stand. As a member of the liberal media for so long, I have to admit that I am sick of the mindset that things should not be censored. The world is not Godly, therefore some things do deserve to be censored. It is my job as a parent to protect my kids and not going to the movie is my way of doing so. As for the movie, I did go to the website as well-it was not something I felt to be appropriate for my kids-surf around there for a while. As for the Harry Potter movies, I never let my kids see those either. I guess we will just have to disagree on this. Just because something is published does not mean it should be read. Thanks for commenting-you made some great points just not something that I am going to give in on.

Sure is sickening that we have to not see a movie because of what nonsense someone writes. Well a so called Christain usually only sees their side anyway why would they have a open mind they never do about anything else. I think it will be a good imaginary movie and I am looking forward to seeing it.
Come on everyone be open minded.
I am sure anyway all this talk about how bad the movie is will make it more popular.

It usually does. I am fine with taking the "I don't Have an open mind" criticism because at least I am protecting my kids. Thanks for the comment! Hope you do enjoy the movie! Just not something for my kids. btw, I was in Target today and all the books were on display with Nicole Kidman's picture on the covers-so the books are going to be promoted with the movie.

Abigail, kudos to you! And about Harry Potter... well, JK is going to have a lot to answer for someday. You know I heard a "causer" say, "Just get people laughing about something they think is sin, and it won't be long before they'll be accepting it as normal." I've seen that come true over and over during my life time. Subtlety is one of the enemy's most-used tactics. "Blessed are you when men revile you for My sake." Don't forget that, Abigail!

Thanks April! I have heard that too! It seems sad that so many people are willing to just go along with it b/c it is "only a movie." Or I don't think I can stand to hear some one say to me again that I am "living in fear or close-minded." I don't think of myself as either of those things, instead as someone trying to exemplify the truth I believe in. Thanks for the comment and the hope!

I have finally found my way through your article and I must say you have affected me. It wasn't easy as this website clearly does not provide any kind of spelling or grammar checker, however your article is quite interesting.
I am not the kind of person that would tell someone else what they can believe and I admire you standing up for your beliefs and boycotting this film. However, to say that a film is "from Satan" is something that I personally believe is taking it a little too far. Still, I give you full credit for the direction you have chosen to take and all the power to you and to those who have commented on this article and have agreed with you.
Keep in mind though, that if your children's faith is strong (which I am quite sure that it is), a simple movie or book, no matter how it tries, should not be able to influence them strongly enough to question their faith.
P.S. I am not strongly religious myself, yet I am refusing to see this movie anyway...it just doesn't look that good.

This article was helpful to me in understanding what the movie is about behind all the spiced up fantasy the director may have replaced the anti-christian views with. I both agree and disagree with letting your children see the movie. If they are young adults and are strong in their faith then maybe it would be a good idea to let them see it and be able to argue their faith even more eloquently after knowing more about the other point of view. However, if your children are young and could be swayed at all, then maybe it is best you do not let them see the movie. This is because children really take to heart messages that they see in movies they may like. If i ever find out what i believe isn't true, i would much rather know that people are raising their kids to believe and work for the good of God and community than to hear that the world was turning bad because of people's lack of effort to do good. If children don't believe there is a reason to do good for others, the world will stop having it's light moments between it's dark ones. We need to keep our children thinking that there is something better, even if there is or not. I believe there is.

what the heck is goin on? is it about killing jesus or not? if i had kids, i would not let them go see it. and if it is about killing jesus, then they need to put that in the previews and reviews. they need to make is clear so that somebody wont take their kids to see the movie not knowing wat it was about and end up regretting it. you never know, they could sew. and we wouldn't want that to happen, now, would we?

I am soooo tired of people saying be open minded. That is the enemy wanting just a crack in the door so that he can enter. This may sound corny to some but don't be so open minded that your brain falls out.
