Traditionally, a Christmas wreath would adorn the front door, welcoming guests and adding a festive touch to your outdoor holiday display. With a little imagination, however, you can break free from the standard door decor and add wreaths to almost every room in your house – and not only on the doors.

Types of Wreaths
First, consider the types of wreaths that are available. There are natural wreaths, available at Christmas tree lots and farms as well as many grocery stores and floral boutiques. These are made with real pine or evergreen branches and will last several weeks. They smell wonderful and give your decor a natural touch.

Artificial wreaths look like the real thing, but are made from synthetic materials and, if well taken care of, will last for many years. These wreaths are available in many retail outlets such as craft stores, hardware stores, home decor outlets, and even card stores. You can get them in various styles and colors, with or without adornments such as bows or artificial pinecones, and even scented.

If the evergreen look isn't what you're after, you can purchase wreaths made of grapevine or straw, or pick up plain white Styrofoam wreaths to decorate with fabric, silk flowers, ribbons, or whatever your heart desires.

Traditional Displays
Wreaths are well-suited to doors, there's no doubt about it. Hang them proudly on any door in your house, not just entrances. You can also hang them on walls to draw attention to certain areas of your home. If you have a particular place where you have set up a miniature village or an old train set complete with cotton snow, hang a wreath on the wall above this area to draw the eye towards your display. You can even affix items related to your display to the wreath, or find a complementary printed ribbon to enhance the overall appeal.

Fireplaces and mantels are ideal spots for a wreath. Hang your wreath far enough above a fireplace so that the heat will not cause a fire hazard or damage to the wreath. If you have a mantel, you can hang the wreath on the wall above and add garland over the mantel to create a luxurious green oasis. Add mini lights and shiny red Christmas tree balls for a festive touch, or attach pinecones with floral wire to keep the look natural.

A Little Out of the Ordinary
Wreaths can make a beautiful table centerpiece. Lay your wreath down in the middle of the table and attach some decorative touches around the outside, like bows, pinecones, walnuts spray painted gold, or artificial frosted fruits. In the center, place a group of chunky candles enough to fill up the space. Only light the candles when you know you will be in the room to keep an eye on them – unattended lit candles are always a fire hazard. Instead of candles, you can use Christmas-themed decorations or ornaments, a pile of pinecones, or more artificial fruit and/or painted nuts.

Another interesting use for wreaths is to make a "wreath tree". Stock up on wreaths of varying sizes, colors, and materials, and pile them high from widest to smallest, creating a cone shape. Attach each wreath to the one below it using floral wire. Once the tree is complete, decorate it with miniature Christmas lights, small tree decorations, or silk flowers. Place on a large lace doily for a lovely presentation. This wreath tree, depending on its finished size, also makes an interesting centerpiece.

Accents and Finishing Touches
Miniature wreaths are widely available check out your local dollar store and stock up. They make delightful accents on everything from your table lamps to your holiday dinner table. Use them as is, or adorn them with ribbon, paint, or other decorations.

For your table lamps, take a miniature wreath and, using sharp scissors, make a cut through the wire. Open up the wreath slightly and wrap it around the bottom of the lamp, just above the base. Pull the cut ends together and, if necessary, twist them tightly shut.

You can also hang a string of mini wreaths from your curtain rods to enhance the window. Using colorful bits of ribbon, tie wreaths, evenly spaced, onto your curtain rods, making bows at the top of each one. Alternatively, you can string them through ribbon, string, or twine and hang, adjusting the spacing as needed.

Miniature Styrofoam wreaths can be painted or covered in fabric and used to decorate your Christmas tree. They can also be hung from knobs on cupboards or knick knack cabinets, or used as decorations on gifts.

For your holiday table, mini wreaths make perfect napkin holders. Roll your napkins or fold them, fan style, and slide the wreath around the prepared napkins, fanning them out on either end. You can leave them plain and simple, or tie a pretty bow to each wreath. Using the same method as you did with the table lamp wreaths, decorate the stems of your wine glasses by winding the cut mini wreaths around them.
