One of the for sure signs that the holidays are coming soon is the appearance of candy canes. Only one type of candy cane was in existence not too long ago.  Everyone was familiar with the standard red and white striped peppermint treat.

Of course, candy canes were also used for decorations, mainly on the season’s Christmas tree, to be eaten after presents were opened Christmas morning. Now candy canes have many decorative uses away from the Christmas tree.  They're much more than just snacks now. We have listed a few of the finest ideas using candy canes for decorating.

1. A wreath made of candy canes will look great. A candy cane wreath for the front door of your home or office makes a refreshing change from the ordinary, wreath. The smallest candy canes are the best, since you can bunch and hook them together to get a circle going! Candy canes are also a great addition to a multi material wreath.

2. Use your candy canes to build a centerpiece. Desks and tables look much better with a few brightly colored candy canes around. Find a beautiful decorative jar and put a few candy canes in it for a centerpiece. Make sure to keep a few extras around, as they tend to disappear!

3. Add some decoration to your candy canes to create other adorable things.  For example, make a reindeer simply by adding felt, glue, and googly eyes.

4. Use candy canes to make tree garland. You can do more with your candy cane tree decorations than just hang them from the bough of a Christmas tree. Take ribbons and several candy canes, and you can turn them into a festive garland for your holiday tree.

5. A gingerbread "Santa's sleigh" won’t be complete without candy canes.  They’ll make excellent rails for a miniature sleigh.

6. Use larger candy canes as aisle markers. Candy canes come in many sizes as well as flavors. Use some of the largest ones and decorate the sides of a hallway, a path outside, or and entranceway.

7. Add candy canes into the plan when you construct a gingerbread village. Candy canes can make great fences, lamp posts, and roadsides for your gingerbread village.

8. Greet your guests with a “Welcome Bowl".  Be sure to have a welcoming bowl full of small delicious candy canes made available to anyone coming into your home or office.  People love the taste and you establish the friendly giving spirit of the season.

This list is by no means complete, and doesn't go into the ways you can use candy cane patterns or artificial candy canes. There is a large place in any holdiay decorating plan for these treats.
