Mineral oil can get you pregnant. It's true, but there is one "small" catch. It won't work unless you are actively trying not to get pregnant. Lubricants containing mineral oil and/or petrolatum, may (will eventually) lead to the failure of a latex condom. As amazing as this is, it is only one of many fascinating facts about this popular, albeit far from top-of-the-line, cosmetic ingredient. "During the rule-making process, it was brought to OSHA's attention that significant deterioration of latex gloves was noted when exposed to petroleum-based lubricants. Therefore, if latex gloves are used, employees shall not apply petroleum-based, including mineral oil based, skin care products (1) ." What hand lotions do your doctors use? If they use latex gloves, you may want to warn them of this danger.

What else can mineral oil do? Mineral oil is derived from crude oil. It acts like a plastic film on your skin, not letting beneficial ingredients in, or allowing toxins to escape. When you use products with a beneficial ingredient, but that product also contains mineral oil, (which has 90 different names by the way) your skin is not going to benefit from the desired ingredient. You are, in a very real sense, suffocating your largest organ. It's a good thing that our skin doesn't absorb large amounts of mineral oil however, because the trace amounts that are eventually absorbed have been scientifically proved to cause hormone imbalance. And in this case, can prevent conception, and even promote miscarriage. So, that lotion you've been using for years may to blame for any number of symptoms including, but not limited to: fatigue, low sex drive, hot flashes, migraines, memory loss, thinning hair, etc (2) .

"Products produced from petroleum, such as mineral oils, are classified as petrochemical pollutants. Petrochemicals...can have a variety of negative hormonal effects in humans...resulting in functional loss of ovarian follicles in females and decreased progesterone production. The ultimate consequence of decreased progesterone production, is estrogen dominance, PMS, endometriosis, miscarriages and many types of ovarian dysfunction. In addition, studies have shown widespread damage to the immune system. Infants of women who have been chronically exposed...are particularly susceptible (3) ." This is a reason for anger and outrage, because women and infants are exactly the ones who are exposed to petroleum on a daily basis. Mineral oil is the primary oil used in cosmetics, from face creams, lipstick and body lotions, to sunscreen and sun tan oils (even products that boast to be "oil-free" often contain petroleum). And, it is worth mentioning that baby oil is 100% mineral oil!

Dr. Obagi, a renowned dermatologist, doesn't believe in the use of mineral oil - for anyone. He says that the #1 cause of aging is the sun and the #2 cause of aging is skin care because of inferior ingredients, especially mineral oil. Dr. Obagi does the grand rounds at Johns Hopkins, where he educates the surgeons and residents on skin care. Among other things, he teaches them not to use products that contain mineral oil.

Dr. Joseph Mercola says, "It is very clear that women seem to be predisposed to far more autoimmune disorders than men. Other problems like thyroid disease and fibromyalgia are also far more common in women. Perhaps one of the major contributing factors is the fact that women tend to use cosmetics and men don't (4) ." What is one ingredient that almost all cosmetics have in common? Mineral oil!

So why on earth would this harmful ingredient be in 98% of American skin care? I'll give you one guess. It's C.H.E.A.P. (About $1.00/gal vs. $30.00 to $200.00/gal for the beneficial botanical oils.)!
