Dental orthodontics for adults and children are devices installed into the mouth which are used to correct teeth alignment, over-bites, under-bites, and many other issues related to how your teeth and gums exist in your mouth.
Dental orthodontics, or braces, come in many different forms these days. They include: metal brackets, plastic brackets, and invisible tray types. The type of braces which is best for you should be determined by your orthodontist because they specialize specifically in braces and their usage. Each different form of dental orthodontics has its own advantages and disadvantages which your orthodontist can easily explain to you.
Dental orthodontics are used to move teeth to lessen the effects of misaligned teeth and bites. When teeth overlap, and are not in alignment with each other, they are harder to keep clean and free from decay. And, when you suffer from a misaligned bite it can be hard to eat certain foods and feel good about your smile as well. Through the use of dental braces these issues can be resolved and you can have a smile you are proud of.
Dental orthodontics are installed by orthodontists who then manipulate them on regular intervals to slowly move your teeth into new positions. Most orthodontic patients are teenagers and children; however, with the new advances in orthodontic dentistry, adults are now also wearing dental braces in record numbers.
How long you will be required to wear dental orthodontics is dependent on the amount of dental work you need done. If you have slight misalignment then you could be done in 12-18 months. If you have more serious issues, you might have to wear your braces for up to three years.
If your dentist feels that you or your child could benefit from the use of dental orthodontics, he or she will refer you to a local orthodontist for evaluation. The first appointment with an orthodontist generally involves taking a set of x-rays and examining your mouth. From there the orthodontist can come up with a treatment and payment plan for you. Once your plans are agreed on, you will have another appointment where your braces will be placed on your teeth.
After you have your braces installed, every month or two you will have to go back in to the orthodontist’s office to have your braces adjusted. Once your teeth are in their new places, you will have your braces removed and retainers installed. You will need to wear your retainers for the first few years after the removal of your braces; retainers insure that your teeth do not move from their new locations.
If you need dental orthodontic work, you should contact your local orthodontist offices and ask what discount dental plan they accept. By using a discount dental plan you can save hundreds of dollars off of the cost of orthodontic work.
