Freedom to a legal immigrant is the realization of a dream come true, and not having to look over their shoulders. Freedom to a dog being saved from the pound is having a nice warm home, kids playing with it all the time, and having all the attention it desired while stuffed in a small cage with three other dogs, two it did not like!
Freedom in June to all school kids, means a vacation from homework, gym, teachers who hold authority, and the actual school itself. No bedtime, playing games on their systems until they want, swimming, and visiting each others houses. Freedom to an ex convict means just about everything. No uniforms, no chains, no lousy slop for food, no fear of being raped or beaten, having a cigarette whenever they want, taking a bath in a nice tub, being with family and friends once again, without glass between them, and having choices, where there were none in prison.
Freedom to those going on vacation means a break from anxiety, deadlines, bosses, office gossip, the same routine every day, and the daily stresses of being an average American. Freedom to seventeen year olds is getting their licenses, and if they are lucky enough to have a car right away, freedom from family when they can just go visit a friend. No more asking mom and dad for rides. This is forming independence, and now they arent always in their parents control. Freedom for parents is not having to drive kids everywhere they need to go, and then having to wait a few hours until they have to go pick them up.
If someone plans on going to College or not, graduation from either spells freedom from homework and tests and teachers and principals and studying and sitting in school all day. When our kids move out on their own, their freedom means being independent of their parents, making their own rules, cleaning their own apartments, paying their own bills, and doing what they want when they want.
Freedom can come about for many reasons, but I think the feeling is the same to all. It is a privilege and a Blessing to be free. To be able to go to sleep at night and feel safe. Or relatively safe, in this day and age. Im not worried about soldiers bursting into my house yet, and harming me or my kids, as some people on this same Earth have to live.
Freedom is not being a teenage girl who is handed over to an older man to marry. Freedom is not being a child that is getting abused. Freedom is not allowing someone to brainwash you. Freedom is to be able to go into any church, of any denomination you wish. Freedom is the ability to believe in whomever we please, and not what our Government insists we believe in. Freedom is to be able to display piercings and tattoos if thats what you are into.
Freedom is supposed to be able to be whatever sexual orientation you wish, but we know thats a freedom we dont all live by. Freedom is to be able to have as many kids as youd like, without the interference of Government.
Freedom means we can voice our opinion without fear. Freedom is wearing whatever clothes wed like, women not having to wear veils unless they want to, and not having to walk ten spaces behind our husbands. Freedom is having enough water and electricity for our needs.
Freedom means so much to so many, and yet there are those who try to take away others freedoms. They preach their sermons and yet actually believe the God Almighty created white, black, Moslem, Spanish, gay, lesbian, and all other people on this Earth, but some He loves and approves of, and some He doesnt.
If a woman had a child with cerebral palsy, and one with diabetes, and one with cancer, would she not love those souls she created? There are those who can understand the woman loving her three kids the same because they did not choose their afflictions. Have you ever asked a gay or lesbian person if they chose their sexual orientation, or do they, too, believe it to be an affliction?
Freedom would be for every human being to be recognized for who they are, and given the same rights as others. If we all have fingers and toes and organs and blood and skin and hair, wouldnt it make sense that the same Entity designed and created us? Would they deliberately design those they dont love and accept?
Freedom needs to be expressed to all and felt by all. Only then, will we truly be free.
Susan Thom is the mother of three children, two sons, 17 and 21, and a daughter 22. Writing calms her, and gives her a place to go. By herself! Clears the head and gets it out. She lives in a rural area, with a lake and mountains, her son and her partner, and has loved writing since she was a child.
She certainly hopes you enjoy her take on life, and her style of communicating that in stories.
She has been on a journey of self discovery for twenty years, and has learned many things about the human mind, and how to maintain some semblance of calm and peace within.
If someone reads one of her stories, and relates to her feelings, and maybe gets a suggestion on how she dealt with them in a positive way, that would be the ultimate gift of her writing.
