Why was Charles Dickin’s 1843 novel “A Christmas Carol" such a big hit? Well in all parts of the world, we all have our share of scrooge’s. Those old misers who cling to their money and shun from anything, which means giving of themselves to help the poor and needy. Christmas of course is known as the “gift giving season" where happiness resides in the souls of all men and women. To men like Ebenezer Scrooge with his famous expression:" Bah Humbug" resents the very word “happiness"

However, like men such as Ebenezer Scrooge there is a deep embedded kind, loving and generous treasure hidden deep within their heart. In the novel by Dickins, it took a revelation of sprits from the spirit world to visit with him and show him the path to the Christmas holiday filled with happiness and good will toward his fellow man.

Today those living the lives of the greedy old man down the street who will never crack a smile or say hello are usually the men “or women" you can trust when the going gets rough. Yes within that cold shell of a man or woman, lies a heart of gold ready to give of itself all the love embedded within. Only not as a display of love for the world to witness for you will not see it coming it is given discreetly.

I’m sure we all know, live, or have lived near some of these lonely souls. Although they may seem to live miserable lives they are never alone for the Lord has a special bond with them he wants them this way.

Therefore, before you condemn the man or woman with the selfish scowl. Offer a word of kindness or reveal a smile, it just may be the breakthrough needed to melt the ice. The world is a troubled place with problems all around us. It is mainly the indifference in people that provokes such an attitude in these troubled souls.

If one is capable of befriending such a person, they’ll find a friend for life in which they can trust and reside in.

An intriguing and thought provoking article David.

Perhaps it is knowledge of sufferring and humanity's selfishness and greed that drives these people into their shells and causes them to seek to avoid contact with others. Self preservation perhaps in case the 'dark side of humanity' is contagious. An unwillingness to mix with those who can cause hurt to someone who is otherwise more genteel and more loving and pure?

Most people I know are chatterboxes, but I recall meeting a very elderly chap in 1994 (he was about 75). He was my friends grandfather and I was warned he was a mean grumpy old man. After an hour of chat with him, he wanted to adopt me. We got on famously. (I was 24)

I found him to be stimulating, witty and worldly, which of course he was and he warmed to my lack of reserve and natural 'respect' for his age and wisdom.

If he was a cranky old man it was because he was treated like a fragile child and not given the credit he deserved as a man who had survived two wars and much more besides. I didn't treat him with kid gloves. He was my senior and a man and I treated him accordingly.

People should give the senior generation more respect.

Meanwhile I shall indeed keep a look out for the silent shadowy figures that seek to keep themselves to themselves.

Yeah CB, I believe the indifference in the majority of people as a whole is a major factor in these as you say "grumpy old men" Have you ever watched the television news and see all the bloodshed in the streets, then a commercial break comes on with a young girl advertising crest white strips for a brighter smile? I myself feel like tossing something at the television screen.
