The man most notably known for being beaten by policemen on the Los Angeles Police Department back in 1991 is once again making the news. This time, it is reported King sustained superficial facial wounds from a gunshot.
The wounds were not life threatening as King was able to ride home on a bicycle before calling to report his injury and this incident to authorities. The incident is alleged to have happened on Wednesday night in San Bernardino and King lives in Rialto. The distance is approximately five miles, which could very well seem like an eternity under stressful conditions.
One report says after the police arrived at King’s home, he along with others appeared to be intoxicated. That report did not confirm whether consumption was made before or after the shooting.
If you recall:
- Four officers were charged with assault with a deadly weapon and excessive use of force but were acquitted of state charges on April 29, 1992.
- The three days of rioting that followed left 55 people dead and 2,000 injured. There were 12,000 arrests and about $1 billion in property damage in Los Angeles.
- Two of the officers, Sgt. Stacey Koon and officer Laurence Powell, were later convicted of federal civil rights violations.
King is expected to recover just fine. He has had other run-ins with authorities since making headlines in 1991.
As we enter the holiday season, King’s words echo in my mind, heart and soul. It is my desire for Peace and Goodwill among all men. I, too, wish we would “all just get along.”
