I have recently been moved to tears on several occasions the last few weeks because of news stories involving horrific acts done to children. Where is our society going that so many of innocent young kids, who can not defend themselves, is being hurt or killed.

Today, I read a story about a girl who is being applauded as an “angel from heaven.”

This seven year old Alexis Gobbins was shot six times as she tried to protect her mom from and enraged man. Who was the man? An ex-boyfriend of the little girl’s mother. According to the Detroit News, the girl's mother, Selietha Parker, 30, was shot in the left side of her head and her bicep by a former boyfriend, who police said was trying to kill Parker. The gunman was disarmed by police and arrested at the scene of the shooting, a Detroit gas station. Police identified him as Calvin Tillie, 29, a four-time convicted felon whom Parker had dated for six months. Parker, who was treated and released at Detroit Receiving Hospital, is now at her daughter's bedside.

The girl had witnessed enough of the abuse when she threw herself in the way of fire. The two had been kidnapped along with another friend and was being driven to their death place where Tillie had planned to kill them all.

They had to stop for gas when this ordeal took place.

This is just becoming a common occurrence today. In this case, it was an ex-boyfriend. A few weeks ago in the case of the unidentified Baby Grace case it was a current boyfriend who worked alongside the actual mom to murder her child.

It is just so surreal to see these adults hurting these children. The report said in the Tallie case that he did not hesitate for a second when little Alexis climbed in front of her mother. He just unloaded six bullets into her. What is wrong with this man?

Those who have heard has been horrified to hear of the gruesome details of the death of Riley Ann Sawyers, Baby Grace. ABC reported, Kimberly Ann Trenor, 19, and her 24-year-old husband, Royce Clyde Zeigler, both of Spring, Texas, are being held in connection with the 2-year-old girl's death on charges of injuring a child and tampering with evidence. In the affidavit, Trenor describes how she and Zeigler beat the toddler with two leather belts and held her head under water in a bathtub on the morning of July 24. Trenor also said in the affivadit that Zeigler picked the child up by her hair and threw her across the room causing her head to slam against a tile floor.

After Sawyers died, Trenor said in the affidavit to the Sheriff's Office, Zeigler covered the child in a purple towel and the pair then went to a Wal-Mart to purchase items to hide and dispose of the body, including a blue plastic container, bleach, a shovel and latex gloves.

According to the affidavit, Trenor said Zeigler hid the container with the remains in a storage shed for two months before the pair tossed the container into the water off Galveston Causeway.

These stories have really taken a toll on me lately. I can not ever see the reason behind these horrific type events. I know one day God in heaven will clear it all up, but in the mean time I wish something would be done to put an end to this type of issues.

I wish new legislation would be passed that would give these adults a taste of their own medicine. I wish someone could take Tillie and his mom out, threaten them then put six shots into Tillie.

Better yet, take Trenor and Zeigler out and do the same as they did to that precious baby.

As parents, it is our job to protect our kids. We need to step it up! We need to keep them close to us and be careful whom we let into our lives. We need to realize that God only gives our kids on loan to us for a short amount of time and we need to do the best we can to raise Godly individuals. I know I will kiss and hold my kids a little closer today after hearing one more of these stories.

My prayers go out to Alexis and I hope she has a full recovery.

Stephany, it really has always been this way but with varied instant forms of communications it becomes more knowledgable to society that this abuse exists. Rhetorically could it just be "they shall have no natural affection"? A terrible situation and it shows the utter levels mankind can stoop to. Best wishes

Stephany,
I'm not certain this is something 'new' or belonging to 'these days'. I think we hear about it more these days, and in gruesome detail. Once, specific details of cases, especially involving children, were not put into a newspaper report to protect the public. Childhood abuse has ever been with us. There is no excuse for it. Part of what is doubly shocking about it now is that social values and mores have moved on, and we recognise what a dreadful thing it is to abuse children. I, too, wish it would never happen and that there was a simple way to stop it. There isn't. Not that I mean we shouldn't try. Over here, in Australia, we've had some terrible cases of children suffering agonising deaths at the hands of their parents, or step parents.
It's good to speak out though. We all need to speak out. And to say loudly that it is not acceptable, and the punishments for the perpetrators has to fit the crime.
I do hope that amazing little girl fully recovers. She is truly an angel.
Hannah Quinn
