"Responsibility does not only lie with the leaders of our countries or with those who have been appointed or elected to do a particular job. It lies with each of us individually. Peace, for example, starts within each one of us. When we have inner peace, we can be at peace with those around us.
When our community is in a state of peace, it can share that peace with neighboring communities, and so on. When we feel love and kindness towards others, it not only makes others feel loved and cared for, but it helps us also to develop inner happiness and peace. And there are ways in which we can consciously work to develop feelings of love and kindness. For some of us, the most effective way to do so is through religious practice. For others it may be non-religious practices. What is important is that we each make a sincere effort to take our responsibility for each other and for the natural environment we live in seriously." H H The Dalai Lama
We as American citizens have always been a restless breed of people. At the turn of the 20 th . Century with inventions such as the automobile, airplane, the practical use of electricity. We have always had challenging opportunities to take on.
Our capitalistic society would bring a young ambitious man or women from rags to riches. We of course had setbacks in our economy with the great depression; however, we have always managed to get by one way or the other.
Fighting in two world wars for what we considered freedom from tyranny and aggression. At the end of world war II veterans returning from war victoriously, all possessed a deep sense of patriotism and a love instilled in their hearts for their country "America."
"One is left with the horrible feeling now that war settles nothing; that to win a war is as disastrous as to lose one." Agatha Christie
The freedom all previous generations were fighting for was the freedom to express their views, their philosophies, and their beliefs. The spirit our founding fathers so nobly and courageously engraved in our constitution which indeed emancipated men and women in all walks of life, and provided justice to one and all.
"The baby boomers" as they were called the sons and daughters of the heroes of war the majority of them were rebellious towards the establishment. The Vietnam War protesters were not the only call for peace during the turbulent 60s.
Dissenters rebelling against the establishment were real, this form of dissent came in many various forms.
The peace we are all in search for is as Dr. Martin Luther King Jr. so elegantly put it: "One day we must come to see that peace is not merely a distant goal we seek, but that it is a means by which we arrive at that goal. We must pursue peaceful ends through peaceful means."
Many psychiatrist may disagree with me when I say that many acts of violence, crime in the streets, or those who use the system that is to swindle and deceive ordinary people from their money only do it legally. These acts are all forms of dissent, psychiatrist love to find the problem with individuals all derives from the individual in question, this belief is absurd
Just like a fine tuned grandfather clock keeps ticking for all parts were so carefully designed by it's creator to do it's part. If one of the clock's parts fails to do its job, the clock will stop. Yes, perhaps the clock must stop for us "we the people" to put it back together again. Only this time we must learn from past mistakes and carefully engineer every part of the clock, which will keep the perfect and precise time without failure.
Peace is more than a country free from war. Actually, the war within us must be dealt with. As the Deli lama put it, we must have inner peace within ourselves. This inner peace does live in all of us however; we cannot bring it into fruition until our outer world is at peace.
"To care for anyone else enough to make his or her problems one's own, is ever the beginning of one's real ethical development." Felix Adler
"Peace on Earth Good Will toward Men" will perhaps be a phrase we can use not only during the Christmas holiday season but every day of the year.
" And she brought forth her firstborn son, and wrapped him in swaddling clothes, and laid him in a manger; because there was no room for them in the inn."
And there were in the same country shepherds abiding in the field, keeping watch over their flock by night.
And, lo, the angel of the Lord came upon them, and the glory of the Lord shone round about them: and they were sore afraid.
And the angel said unto them, Fear not: for, behold, I bring you good tidings of great joy, which shall be to all people.
For unto you is born this day in the city of David a Savior, which is Christ the Lord.
And this shall be a sign unto you; Ye shall find the babe wrapped in swaddling clothes, lying in a manger.
And suddenly there was with the angel a multitude of the heavenly host praising God, and saying,
Glory to God in the highest, and on earth peace, good will toward men.

hi david,
i believe this to be your best article yet.
i did get something out of it, a good warm
feeling for peace, and even more of a desire to spread it.
thank you,
best regards,

Peace is the answer, I believe. And I believe that seeing our own violence, without denying it, and accepting that we are, in fact, violent, is the only thing that will shock us into understanding that we are not peaceful.
This kind of abrupt seeing is true for everything; once we see what we really are, there is a very good chance that a change will take place. We must see first, the rest will follow. I call it random, intense, mindfulness!
I like your writing, it reflects wisdom, understanding, a certain depth.

Yes, David, Peace and Love, the Spirit of Christmas and really of all good men everywhere. Too bad while there are many who desire this they are the idealists that this world rejects. Sad but true. Just look at John Lennon and where he is? How about Martin Luther King? Do we remember Ghandi? And yes, The Deli Lama and of course Jesus Himself, hung on a cross. David a really great article and one that should inspire us who desire peace and love to perhaps do more about bringing it to fruition! Best Wishes RTM keep writing you are getting quite the following! Respond to this comment

Thank you Mr. Melaccio, I don't remember Ghandi while he was alive however I have read a lot of his work. This is one of his quotes "You must be the change you want to see in the world"
Merry Christmas, I'm going to my brother's home tonight where all the family (that is the family here in Florida) will gather. I've tried to be good through the year so maybe Santa will be good to me. Respond to this comment
