The best-paid female actress of the 90's was Julia Roberts.

who appeared in lead roles in both disappointments and profitable films - usually likable far fetched comedies.

She first joined the club of actresses earning a million dollars per picture after being nominated for an Academy Award for director Garry Marshall's Pretty Woman (1990), with her role as a Hollywood hooker in a red-killer dress being romanced by corporate tycoon Richard Gere for $3,000/week.

Other film appearances included: I Love Trouble (1994), Mary Reilly (1996), Everyone Says I Love You (1996), My Best Friend's Wedding (1997), Conspiracy Theory (1997), Stepmom (1998), Notting Hill (1999) and a wedding-phobia tale titled Runaway Bride (1999) - reteamed on screen with Richard Gere almost a decade after Pretty Woman.

By the end of the decade, Julia Roberts was able to command and equal male salaries - $20 million for her role in Steven Soderbergh's Erin Brockovich (2000),[which happened to be my favorite] the film for which she won her first Oscar in 2001, playing the title role of an underdog single mother working as a legal assistant , winning against insurmountable odds against a California power company.

She was born Julie Fiona Roberts in Atlanta, Georgia, on October 28, 1967, into a very large extended family of English, Welsh, Scottish and Irish extraction. Two particular events in this period left a deep and lasting mark. One was the death from cancer of her father, when he was just 47 and she was just ten. The other was the sudden breakthrough of her brother, Eric. Having scored a role in the soap Another World in 1977.

She made her screen debut with a tiny role in the wacky sex-farce Firehouse, where the least effective fire station in town is transformed by the introduction of often naked female rookies[she was not one of the females that showed her apparent assets]. In 1988 she appeared in Satisfaction, later renamed Girls Of Summer, The year would end with her first critical hit, Mystic Pizza. Next came a major role for Julia in the Steel Magnolias where she would win an Oscar nomination and a Golden Globe.Next came pretty women with Richard Gere. The movie cost was about $14 Million, but it would go on to gross $178 Million in the U.S. alone. And the rest is history.

At a young age she would be teased for her big mouth and glasses at school and, according to Eric, her brother, would be given a hard time at home by her step-father.

At that time in her life she never dreamed that one day she would be known as one of Hollywood's most beautiful actresses and highest paid actress of the nineties.
