If you are in the market for a white down comforter, it is a good idea to learn all can about the comforter before you make a purchase. A quality white down comforter does not come cheap, but if you know how to choose well, it will last you a very long time. Read on to discover what to look for in a white down comforter.

The first thing that you need to know before buying a down comforter is fill power. Fill power is the amount of space in one ounce of down. This is determined by taking an ounce of down and compressing it. When released, the amount of space that it fills up as it expands is measured in cubic inches.

So when shopping for a comforter and you see a fill power of 575, this means that the down fills 575 cubic inches of space. The higher the fill power, the higher quality of down. Any comforter over 650 is considered luxury quality.

When looking at the contents of the comforter, you may want to try to find goose down instead of duck down. Goose down from mature geese that live in a very cold climate is the best because it forms bigger clusters to trap more body heat. So if you want a comforter that will keep you toasty warm on those cold winter nights, look for this type of down in your white down comforter.

Thread count is important also. Thread count is calculated by the amount of threads woven per square inch. The finer the threads, the higher the thread count. It usually starts at 200 threads per inch and goes up from there. The higher the thread count, the more breathable for the fabric becomes. A higher thread count also results in lighter and smoother fabric.

To find a white down comforter that will not leak out, you need to search for a cotton cambric down proof fabric. This fabric is down proofed by a process that compresses the fabric between two giant steel rollers. This compression will fill in small spaces that are not visible to the human eye.

The best down proof fabric comes from Germany or Switzerland. A good down comforter with a thread count over 300 and made from this fabric will last 10 to 15 years with normal use. So although these white down comforters may cost a little more, you will get years of wear out of them.

So there you have the basics of what to look for when buying a white down comforter. If you want quality that will last several years, be prepared to pay for it. But the investment will be worth it in the long run.
