Being dumb is very American,
for good reason.

A country that moves at hyper speed
needs minds that are kept tidy,
light, disposable, ready for the next
Donna Karen, Versace,
Hula-hoop, pet rock,
Seinfeld and Friends.

At reading bars we're offered
product with half the kick at triple the price;
instant experience and recipe self-help
over Byron, Keats, Whitman and
Sunday comics in the nude.

And we ask why Johnny's professor
can't read and find a great mind
still annoying and adorning our age.

In idle hours entertainment seduces introspection
into empty red stilettos and day-glow
green rubber minnies.

Television offers blind, pancake perception;
consumer fetishism; the drooling
lax creativity of plug-in-drug.
If we drove our couches, would there be
occasional checkpoint carpet blocks?

The fascist scream of daytime TV
sends democracy scurrying for its recording
of The Battle Hymn of the Republic and
the Chairman of the Board's rendering
of Mack the Knife.

But what is sacrifice?
We have the world at our fingertips.
Just think!
Nine pages of Reniors and then
the roller skating horse comes in.

I'd like to oblige with
convention, description and
ax-free images,
but I fear for our lives
and the seventh angel's spilled vial
coaxing from the air:
"It is done."
