If you are a mom, then you have either owned or even re-sold a copy of the book, "What to Expect When You're Expecting. If you haven't ever owned this book and want a copy, I guarantee there will be one at your next Church or community yard sale. This book hangs in there on the best selling list for pregnancy books like the last raisin in the box.
This time of year we often read, and sing about a young woman who didn't have access to this question answering book and was suddenly pregnant with the Son of Man! Mary, the mother of Jesus was NOT expecting to be "expecting". She was engaged to Joseph and becoming pregnant out of wedlock, being chosen to carry and give birth to the Messiah were all things she was not expecting. She was even afraid when she first heard the news.
However, one of the many great things that comes out of this story, is that in the Mathew version, Mary learns that Jesus is to be called, Emmanuel which means "God with us".
So that while she didn't have access to best selling pregnancy books, she had something better. She would have God with her.
When we have unexpected things happen to us this Holiday season that might otherwise steal our JOY, like unexpected guests, a fruitcake in the mailbox, circling the mall parking lot for an hour, etc. just take a few quiet moments to remember the reason for the season, Jesus Christ, and that He is God with us, Emmanuel.
