Every year, I read endless articles about making resolutions to better my life in the next year. I can read about how to lose weight, improve my finances, treat people better, etc.
Despite endless advice on how to make me a better person, I only last a few days each year being that better person. I think it is shortly after midnight that I finish off the Last of the party food, lack of sleep the next day leaves me griping at my family or anyone who comes in my way and finances-where is that calculator again?
In that spirit, this article is going to be the anti-resolution article. It is the resolutions that I can and will keep this year. Granted, some are sarcastic and some are sweet, but they are my resolutions that I can actually keep.
I will eat
I would like to say that I would eat healthy or I will eat in moderation, but there are those days in the year when I will need something extra. There is Valentines Day a month away from the start of a new year. Get real. Who can honestly pass up endless candy hearts and chocolate? Or more realistically, who can survive a trip to a store with two kids without some candy or chocolate?
I will miscalculate my budget
I am a writer, not an accountant. My husband is of the creative field as well. Ever heard the saying, two wrongs don't make a right. We are a living example of that. Money is something we have to work at and I can guarantee that we will mess up on it several times this year. We will work at it, but we both know this resolution is more realistic for us to keep.
I will say something to piss somebody off
Some people have a knack for this. I, less so that my husbandJ, am one of those people. I can't tell you how many times I have had to remove a foot out of my mouth. Women have a tendency to get hurt feelings. I am one of those women. But I am also one of those that seem to be misconstrued in that arena leaving me spending most of the year apologizing for remarks.
I will thank God for my family
My husband and kids are amazing so this resolution will be easy to keep. I can honestly say despite the hours of yelling at one another or fighting, there will not be a night that I go to bed without doing this. I am the most blessed woman on earth because I have an amazing family!
So this is a short list, I know. I guess my expectations aren't that high. Part of living is trying to make oneself a better person, but I don't think making resolutions is the way to accomplish that.
If you notice, the most popular articles are the ones that promote being able to help you keep those resolutions. That is a sign that resolutions tend to be empty goals that even those who make them know will not last. Although mostly done in humor, those above are resolutions that I can keep. What about you? Do you have some that you know will keep?
