Its easy to understand why gel candles have become so popular so fast. They have opened up new horizons that other waxes just arn't capable of, beautiful suspended embeds, fun beverage and seascape candles, and a captivating glow that filters through the whole candle. Gel candles also hold fragrance well and burn on average 2-3x longer than traditional waxes.

But just like any candle, gel candles come with they're own dangers. There are very strick guidelines that must be followed to ensure you are buying a safe and quality candle. The first thing I check when buying a candle, is that the only gel being used is patented penreco(R) gel. Penreco gel is the best in the market, and the only gel formulated to make gel candles. There are candle companies out there who try to duplicate penreco gel on they're own, making dangerous and unstable candles, this is also illegal, so always be sure the manufacturer is using Penreco's gel.

Secondly, you need to be careful in reguards to the material being used for the candle wicks, and this holds true for any type of candle. Be wary of very cheap candles, i.e. dollarstore. Many of these candles are made in India using additives that can be toxic, such as lead. A quality candle may cost you a little more, but it should also last you longer, and the peace of mind in knowing your candles aren't releasing any dangerous toxins into the air your family is breathing! Cotton wicks are recommended.

The biggest difference in gel candles and traditional wax candles is the type of fragrance oil that must be used. Fragrances must be specially formulated for gel candles and completely oil suluble. If such a precaution is ignored, pockets of scent can form in the candle that are highly flammable. Avoid gel candles that have a cloudy look to them, unless the manufacturer colored the candle on purpose for that effect.

To recap, gel candles are as safe if not safer than other candles, as long as the proper precautions are made by the candle maker. After all, out of 23 of the latest candle recalls made by the U.S Consumer Product Safety Commission, only 2 were for gel candles. So be an alert consumer, keep your wicks trimmed to 1/4" and enjoy.

www.geliciouscandles.com offers penreco(R) gel candles that burn smoke free and are non hazardous to your health.
