It is said that the Ego is a force unto it's own. A force to be reckoned with. A force over which we have little, if any, control over. In the field of Psychology, one of the first 'entities' one learns about is the Ego. The Ego is defined as 'the one of the three divisions of the psyche in psychoanalytic theory that serves as the organized conscious mediator between the person and reality especially by functioning both in the perception of and adaptation to reality'. Freud was hellbent on giving the Ego it's due. But what if, as we become more evolved and more conscious of our ability to deliberately create our thoughts, we were to ditch the Ego and move on to a more productive means of living. In other words, what if, by telling the Ego to take a hike, we were able to CONSCIOUSLY AND DELIBERATELY control how we do what we do, and subsequently, create the lives we intended before we arrived in this physical form? What if?
The Ego's Power ~
The Ego is a powerful force that refuses to go down easy. It may be a primal instinct that has allowed our species to continue. It may be that force that keeps us alive as small, fragile infants. Or it may just be that the Ego has had it's day and it's fighting hard to remain intact as we evolve, no longer in need of it's services. Of course, none of this is in any way a scientific representation. It is merely speculation on the part of a person who's darned tired of wrestling with Ego and all it's machisimo. It seems to me that the Ego is the biggest obstacle to returning to one's truest Self. It's a big, fat bully waiting to knock us out every time we don't give it our chocolate cake. And I say it's high time we DID tell it to take a hike. Think about it. How many truly kind people have you ever met who had an Ego issue? How many 'servant hearts' have you ever run across who had a stitch of egomania? Do you suppose they knew something we hadn't yet figured out? Like how to kick their Ego to the curb and just get on with living their lovely, fulfilled Lives? If the Ego has so much power over us, then how much power do we hold? I like to think of it in terms of 'the Trinity'
(disclaimer: to all those Christians without a sense of humor, please note: this is meant to be FUNNY, not blasphemous!)
The Trinity ~
So, back to my 'Trinity' theory~ let's say that we have these 3 'pieces' of what makes up who we are. (I'm not talking psychology here, I'm speaking from my own 'fantasy' perspective...not to be confused with 'fantastic"; vote is still out on that)
So we have the Ego, which seems to be a subconscious sort of stream, completely bent on ruining our lives. Then there's the Conscious Self, which we are aware of in our 'waking state'. Finally, the Higher Self, which seems to be the best of all 3. It's the part of us that has ALWAYS been, before we took physical form, before we could use our brains, before we had toes and fingers and various other appendages. It's THE part of our Selves that has all the knowledge of Source. Call it God. Call it Allah. Call it SuperMom. Doesn't matter what you call it. It's the 'All-That-Is' that knows all that is, and has been and will be. It's the part of each of us that has no need whatsoever for the Ego. And the Ego does NOT like that.
What if we were to have a little chat with our Ego? What if we were to sit quietly, as in mediation, and say, "You know, I realize you're here for a reason. But your agenda is way different from mine. So how about we call 'truce'? How about you just have a seat over there in the corner and I'll call you when I need you? Whaddya say, Ego? Can you just take a break for a while?"
Now, as crazy as that may sound, the point is that were we to treat this entity, Ego, as an entity unto it's own (which it certainly seems to be, based on how much havoc it can wreak!), and 'tell it' what we're intending, then perhaps we can convince it to have a seat in the corner so that we may get on with our more evolved way of living. Think of it as a means of communicating with the 'child' that refuses to behave. Some folks believe you should give them a good 'lickin', while others use this 'time out' method. Whatever the case, it's merely a means to an end which may be a bit more effective in living the lives we intended. Call me crazy, but I swear, it works!
So What DO You Have To Lose?
If you were to lose the Ego and move beyond the primal being that Ego is, you might find that it wasn't much of a loss at all. You may find that without your Ego running your life, you can let go of a bunch of other inane reactions that really don't serve you. You may find that, in the end, your Ego is just as useless as your 'wisdom teeth'. And once you let it go, you'll be so much better off. Besides, if your Ego is 'all that', how come it always causes so much trouble? But you don't need to put on boxing gloves to lose your Ego. I assure you, the moment you stop fighting it and just let it go, that is the precise moment that your precious little (or large!) Ego is going to have a seat in the corner...and wait for you to fail. The good news is, you shall not fail. You shall begin the magnificent creation that is YOUR LIFE. And what a beautiful thing that is.
