| Let's talk about the
wonders behind Pocket PC TV Remote Control Science. Apparently, pocket
PC and TV technologies have improved to the point that your Video,
Hi-Fi, and TV equipment can be linked to your pocket PC via the IR
port.
One source says it is possible to employ the Jornada 525
pocket PC (based on the Windows CE 3.0 operating system) to be an
unlikely remote control for your Sony brand TV and other compatible
devices. He relied on Embedded C++ to create the functionality
necessary to make his pocket PC into the next alternative to the usual
remote control for such Sony products. He was motivated to resort to
exploring the pocket PC – TV remote control relationship simply because
he lost the real remote control for his Sony TV and the new remote only
gave him black and white pictures on his Sony TV set. The difficulty
with his solution is that you need to be somewhat of a skilled
programmer to be able to understand how Embedded C++ can be used for
this purpose.
Another website actually sells mobile device
solutions (like those compatible with Pocket PCs) so that the mobile
device can act as a universal remote control. The site at novii.tv
sells three products under the pocket PC TV remote control category –
the $19.99 NoviiRemote Classic for Pocket PC, the $34.99 NoviiRemote
Deluxe for Pocket PC, and the Wake and Watch. The $19.99 product is
said to be compatible with all handheld Pocket PC versions (including
the newest releases) and can help you manage your home entertainment
systems (including the stereo and TV) through your handheld Pocket PC.
It is supposed to be very user-friendly because you get to use it
within minutes from setting up the system. The $34.99 product basically
does the same thing as the $19.99 product – which is managing your home
entertainment system as a universal remote control solution – but has
some other features to jazz up your solution for you. The Wake and
Watch uses your handheld mobile devices like Pocket PCs to stay
connected to your home entertainment system and then trigger the home
entertainment system so that it starts to play to wake you up at a
pre-arranged time. However, to use the Wake and Watch solution, you
need a mobile device that has both an infrared port and a touch screen.
The solutions on this site are more user-friendly because you need not
be a programmer of any sort to use them – they are geared for the
average non-techies among us.
Apparently, even the iPod (that
gadget which is now the hallmark of any self-respecting yuppie) can be
turned into a universal remote control device. It is quite universal in
approach because you can use the iPod (now a remote control) to manage
your home entertainment system, DVD player, Media Center PC, Direct TV,
TV set, Ultimate TV PVR, XM Satellite Radio, Xbox, and the Roomba (and
maybe some other devices that you can try out the iPod on to see if
this theory works.)
The iPod solution simply works by
pre-recording infrared remote "sounds" on the iPod so that they get
listed on the iPod as songs. You then rely on a sound-to-IR converter
so that the "infrared remote songs" will be converted into IR format –
and voila! Your iPod is now a universal remote control. You may be
surprised to find your iPod universal remote control is quite powerful
– you can control devices from up to 100 feet away (making this
converted iPod even more powerful than many normal remote control
units.) Now, one wonders if this universal remote control will work on
those new high-tech electronic toilets as well for remote flushing
action. What do you think?
