Windscreens are an essential component of automobiles. Damages, both minor and extensive are a common occurrence with windscreens. Minor damages like small chips and minute scratches can be easily repaired. If the damage is extensive then the only option is windscreen replacement.

Windscreen chips often happen due to small flying stones that bounce of the road and collide with windscreens. They can cause small pits in the windscreen glass. If the chips are left unattended for long then moisture and dust will enter the chipped area and will to spread the damage.

Windscreen chips falls into the following multiple categories:
•    bulls-eye
•    bees wing
•    half moon
•    combination
•    clover leaf
•    star breaks
•    sand blasted

Bulls-eye, bees wing, half moon, clover leaf and star breaks can easily be identified by their shape. Combination type is a combination of the above types of windscreen chips.
Sandblasts are diamond like scratches caused by high speed sand that blows against the windscreen. Windscreen chips that are of a lesser diameter than 1.5 inches can be easily repaired without windscreen replacement. But sand blasted chips cannot be repaired. In such cases it is advisable to replace the windscreen. Also it is only laminated windscreens that can be repaired. Tempered windscreens cannot be repaired and are usually replaced.

The windscreen damages should be taken care of at the earliest. The windscreen chips may be minute and often the owner may not notice them or even ignore them thinking that it is of not much consequence. This could cause further damage to the windscreen as dirt, dust and moisture may accumulate in the chipped area thus leading to spreading of the damage beyond repair. Once this happens then the only solution is to have it replaced as soon as possible to make your vehicle roadworthy.

Windscreen repairs are not very time consuming. As soon as a chip in the windscreen is noticed it is advisable to place an adhesive tape over the concerned area and request the service of a windscreen expert as soon as possible. The adhesive tape will keep out the dust, dirt and moisture thus preventing any further damage to the windscreen. An efficient windscreen expert will be able to repair the damage in less than half an hour thus making the vehicle roadworthy.
The repairs done are permanent in nature and will make the windscreen stronger.

If the chips are repaired as early as possible then windscreen replacement can be avoided. Windscreen replacements are more time consuming than windscreen repairs. If windscreen replacements are done then it will take a few days to make your vehicle completely roadworthy. Windscreen repairs are also covered by the insurance companies. If the repairs are done early, then it will save a lot of time and money for both the owner and the insurance companies. Windscreen repairs are more economical to the insurance companies and to the owner than windscreen replacements. Windscreen repairs are fully covered by the insurance companies, but windscreen replacements may not be given the same treatment and you will usually need to pay an excess for windscreen replacements.
