By far, one of the best ways to score big points with your wife this Valentine's day is to take over the planning and cooking and to put the effort into a romantic dinner for two. Yes, flowers and chocolates are always a good thing, and so are dinner reservations, but what we really want is a show of effort and thought.
First off, here are the don'ts to having a romantic dinner for two:
- Don't have a child with an ear ache anywhere in the vicinity.
- Don't call a babysitter who's love life is more important than yours.
- Don't place a glass dish of sticky rice on a hot stove top and watch it explode all over the kitchen.
- Don't buy lobster tails that cook down to the size of shrimp.
All the items above are just a few of my failures at trying to cook a romantic dinner for two. My husband actually holds the record in our home for making the best romantic dinner for two. It was our first date and it still melts my heart when he makes this dinner.
Here are the steps, simple menu, and recipes.
Steps:
1) Husband calls and sets up off site babysitting (like Grandma's)
2) He places an invitation on your pillow that morning to invite you to your dinner.
3) Sets the table and lights candles
4) He cooks Beef Stroganoff, steamed rosemary beans, dinner rolls, store bought cheesecake desert, and served with YOUR favorite wine or beverage.(or whatever meal he can cook well not including mac-n-cheese)
5) Husband cleans up the kitchen! J
Recipe for Beef Stroganoff and beans. The cheesecake is store bought (play it safe)
Simple and Delicious Beef Stroganoff
Ingredients
2 lb Sirloin Tip
2/3 cup water
1/3 small can tomato paste
1 envelope Lipton onion soup mix
1 cup sour crme
2 TBS flour
Cooked egg noodles
Cut meat across the grain into thin strips. Brown meat, add water, soup mix, and tomato paste, heat. Blend flour into sour crme, add to the pan. Cook 5 minutes until thick and hot. Serve over cooked egg noodles.
Rosemary Steamed Green Beans
Fresh long green or snap beans
Fresh rosemary sprigs or crushed dry rosemary (if you can't find fresh)
Snap off or cut the ends off the green beans.
Place one inch of water in a pan beneath a steamer OR use a microwavable dish with a lid and put a little water in the bottom.
Place the rosemary sprigs under the beans and steam (or microwave) until tender.
Have your husband buy the bread and cheesecake just to play it safe. Then serve this meal with a glass of your favorite wine. Our favorite is a German wine called Gerwertz.
