I remember as a child going through grammar school how we would enjoy giving Valentine cards to our schoolmates.
As we mature, we give chocolate candy and perhaps jewelry to our spouse. In a way Valentine's Day is a way of expressing love to your partner just as you would on Christmas Day or on their birthday.
To me Valentines Day brings back memories of Vietnam when my company made contact with the enemy. February 14, 1968 this was my first firefight we lost many good men on that day. I have an article on Search Warp relating to this day titled Valentine Ridgeif anyone cares to read it.
Another Valentines Day I remember was Valentines Day of 1985 my father's funeral was on this day. Hey, Valentines Day should not be a day to recall these unpleasant occasions. Or should it? If Valentine's Day means expressing your love to someone then these two episodes of my life my first firefight and my father's funeral brings back memories of lost loved ones.
There are several stories and legends about just who Valentine was. One legend contends that Valentine was a priest who served during the third century in Rome. When Emperor Claudius II decided that single men made better soldiers than those with wives and families, he outlawed marriage for young men -- his crop of potential soldiers. Valentine, realizing the injustice of the decree, defied Claudius and continued to perform marriages for young lovers in secret. When Valentine's actions were discovered Claudius ordered that he be put to death.
