As February 14th hits, worldwide, all the many different cultures, for all the many different reasons deriving from all the many different legends all celebrating Saint Valentine's Day, on February 14th.
The very first recorded love letter (or poem) was recorded on February 14th 269 AD. Where a Roman Priest named Valentine, was imprisoned for his love of God, and performing Wedding Ceremonies behind the Ruthless Emperor Claudius II, who had abolished marriage, engagements, and celebrating love, due to the fact that his soldiers didn't want to leave their sweethearts to join in battle. Valentine secretly married lovers, and was arrested, imprisoned, and before his execution by beheading, he made a cherished friendship with the jailer's daughter, (thought to be blind, and healed by the Priest) on his final night, he wrote her a letter, and signed it, Your Valentine.
As the years passed, Valentine was named Saint Valentine, and when the anniversary of his death arrives, every year, traditionally lovers will write a letter, lyric or poem for their true love.
What makes a love letter special?
A love letter is an expression, of love, where you show you cherish, adore, appreciate, admire, whatever you feelings are for you true love, is expressed in a special sentiment. Some people will buy a store sold Valentine with something written on it that best describes their feelings. Others, will compose one themselves, from their heart, with an image creating in their heart, what they mean to you.
I've been a professional writer for over half of my life, and writing Romance is on the top of my list. I decided to create this article geared toward helping those who wish to go the distance, and compose that perfect lover letter for their sweetheart. Here are some tips and tricks to easily put together a love letter, that will wow her (him) especially because it comes from your heart.
Before you sit down to start writing, it's best to make a list, keep it short, but tally up all the reasons why you;
A. Admire your sweetheart.
B. Why you fell in love with your sweetheart.
C. Qualities they have that you think are extraordinary.
D. Why you respect them so deeply.
E. How would you compliment your sweetheart.
F. How your life has improved since they came into your life.
G. What physical qualities stand out in your mind, the way she laughs, the color of her eyes.
Add anything that's not on the list.
Next.
Go through your list, and put them in order according to what stands out to you. Try to keep it 2 to 3 sentences at the longest for each. Less is more, so if you can keep it short, then she will grasp your point much better. Just remember that you want her to feel special, and know that you love her, and always will.
After you get your ideas organized, then you can read them over, and decided if you want to put it in a poem, or just a letter. We'll take a look at poems first, and see if it's for you.
Poems
Here are some simple tips on writing a poem for your boyfriend (girlfriend), lover, other half, spouse, what ever you want to call them.
Poems aren't as hard as they sound. Poems are simple, short expressions, with a meaning or purpose. Pick one of the reasons you wrote down, and call that your purpose, or theme if you will. Then you just put it down, and rhyme at the end, reading it out loud to make sure it makes sense. And for a tip, Roses are Red, has been done to death, and it isn't original.. and really has the impact of soggy bread.
When you start your poem, write down the first line, taking it from your list, and just go with it.
Let's say you said, When she laughs, it makes my knees turn to butter, and I'd follow that woman anywhere, with that as the theme, let's start with something like this.
The soft purr of your voice, tickles my ear
The gentle laugh from your lips, calls me near
You irresistible smile, I would gladly follow
Now, that's a start. We got the first two lines down ok, it's sweet, and the bottom line needs a mate. When you are writing a poem, and get stuck, try reversing the order in the lines, and see if that helps. We are going to take ‘follow' and put it at the first of the line, because ‘follow' isn't an easy word to rhyme, and ‘smile' just might work.

The soft purr of your voice, tickles my ear
The gentle laugh from your lips, calls me near
I would gladly follow, your irresistible smile,
For all the days of my life, across any miles.
Now that works, it's something I just threw together, it stayed with the theme that when she laughs, it makes my knees turn to butter, that her laugh calls me there, and that you are devoted to her, in that you would follow her anywhere.
Writing Love Letters.

Writing love letters can be easy, here are some quick and easy tips on composing a love letter.
Love letters, when kept in context, don't actually have to be difficult either. Keeping them short, to the point, and knowing your point are the key elements in getting a good love letter written. Take a look at your list again, and the part of her, (him) that really stands out to you, that you want to say to her, will jump out at you. You already know what you want to say, we just need to develop a voice, or tone per say, in getting it down on keyboard, or paper.
Now establish your point.
What is it that you want to say to your sweetheart on Valentines day.
A soppy bread tip. Don't apologize for things you've done that might have hurt her in the past. This is a celebration of your love, not a reunion for the bad things. Also with soppy bread goes along with hiding behind writing, for confrontation, and huge huge announcements, and BIG QUESTIONS. All better left for in person.
What you feel in your heart when you see her. When you hear her voice. How she makes you feel as a man. How she's been so strong for you, through rough, or happy with you through good. How you can't see your life without her. How she is the only person in this world, that you wan to be with, just because of how special she is, and you know how luck you are to have her in your life.
Those are some of the things you might be feeling. You can express them in words, in a love letter, but not all of them at once. A focus on the most important thing that you really want her to know, that if by some, god forbid, reason, you were to never see her again by tomorrow morning, what would you, deep down in your gut what her to know. Or maybe it's simply a rendition of something that happened between you two, as innocent as the first hello, to whatever you hold dear, and simply express it in a few short simple words. It's not a poem, so no rhyming necessary.
When you clear out all the mushy mushy, and get right to the root of it, then you are being sincere, and sincerity is what makes a love letter meaningful and memorable.
Now your love letter doesn't have to be written like an email to a friend. You don't have to start with Dear Sweetheart. You don't have to create it like a letter at all. Most famous love letters, are like a sonnet, just a few lines, of simple sentiments describing an emotion of endearment that lives deep down in your gut toward someone.
For example.
When I saw you yesterday, and you turned and smiled up at me. That precious and most unique happening, quivered me to my very bones, right to my very soul. And I want you to know today, that in my heart is your home, and you are with me always.. and always I with you.
Ok, so I just threw that out of my head, I could picture a guy, just melting inside every time his girl smiles up at him, and she touched him in a place down deep inside him, that he will always cherish, wether she leaves him, or spends eternity with him, and whamo there you have it.
It might take a few tries, but just use the lines you wrote, and add a few emotional feelings to it. If you aren't in touch with your emotions, and you want to just write a few lines, like.
I wanted to give you this Valentine, written in my own words, because you are so special to me, and I honestly couldn't find anything in the stores, that would describe how deeply I love you.
So here ya go. I love you, and Happy Valentine day
From your lovestruck man.
She will melt to her toes, no matter what you, what would really excite her, is that you took the time to make it with your own hands.
Now that you've got the words down, you might want to do a few things to make her Valentine extra special.
They sell some pretty Valentine heart stickers, at any craft store. They also sell pretty ribbons, and furry things are cute. You could trim, or get your little sister, or niece's advice, and trim the card with fluffy pink or red fur, glue hearts, or glitter to the card.
If you buy her perfume to go with her card, spray some on it, or you can buy scented paper to put it on. Rule of thumb, girls love the smell of cherry, or vanilla. In case you aren't sure. Rose is ok, and most aren't crazy about lavender, although it is popular with some girls. Or you can spray your own perfume (girls) or cologne (guys).
Since it's only one letter, it doesn't hurt to go all out and get her (him) the prettiest, coolest stationary. Try out the custom paper at the stationary stores. One little tip, believe it or not, you can get printer paper that is like tissue paper. It's seen through, and has designs on them. I have some with outlines of silver roses, gold roses, gold outlines of cherubs, vines. It's gorges, and when you get the printer paper version, they are really gorges when they are printed on. And worth it. If you end up buying a pack, that's ok, give it to her, and she can use it for her scrapbook of your life together.
Sprinkle magic over your letter.
Girls, put on some red lipstick and seal your letter with a kiss. Guys, you can sprinkle glitter over the letter, or put the letter in the hands of a fluffy teddy bear. Don't forget to tell her you love her, (him), and don't forget your XXOO, *hugs* forever and ever.
You can also get a music box to stick to it, at certain craft stores, and when she opens it, it will sing. You can attach a key to the letter, and tell her it's the key to your heart. You can attach a charm, of a heart, in the letter and tell her it's for her to keep. You can attach a rose to the front cover with a red bow. You can tape chocolate kisses to the cover. Cut the letter in a heart shape. Whatever you wish, to show your sweetheart you love her, (him).
Here are some examples of famous love letters, some of the most famous romantic lines ever written.
Christopher Marlowe (Shakespeare Fun Rival) (1564–1593) from "The Passionate Shepherd to His Love"
Come live with me, and be my love;
And we will all the pleasures prove
That valleys, groves, hills, and fields,
Woods or steepy mountain yields.
Love conquers all things; let us too surrender to Love.
Vergil (70–19 B.C.) Eclogues, X, l. 69
Drink to me only with thine eyes,
And I will pledge with mine;
Or leave a kiss but in the cup,
And I'll not look for wine. Ben Jonson (1573–1637)
By Gustave Flaubert
Gustave Flaubert, famous French writer, to his wife Louise Colet.
I will cover you with love when next I see you, with caresses, with ecstasy. I want to gorge you with all the joys of the flesh, so that you faint and die. I want you to be amazed by me, and to confess to yourself that you had never even dreamed of such transports... When you are old, I want you to recall those few hours, I want your dry bones to quiver with joy when you think of them.
By Mark Twain

Ah, love, let us be true
To one another! for the world, which seems
To lie before us like a land of dreams,
So various, so beautiful, so new,
Hath really neither joy, nor love, nor light,Nor certitude, nor peace, nor help for pain.

Peace and Love
