As my husband and I browsed through our local Walmart store this morning, my husband-an old-school type of guy-remarks about all the hoop-la surrounding Valentine's Day.
"Look at all this stuff," he commented as he picked through a boat-load of bright red and white stuffed animals. Rows and rows of heart-shaped boxes of candy and mountains of red crinkle paper wrapped roses. "What's it all about?" he looked at me with such a look of amazement that I had to laugh out loud.
"Where have you been?" I asked with just the same amount of amazement that he exhibited. It's Valentine's Day this week, or have you forgotten again?"
"But what's it all about. What's it good for?" he asked with a pained expression.
I have to explain a little here about my husband and his attitude toward holidays-any holiday. Two days or so after the holiday has come and gone, he asks me what he got me. In the twenty five years of our marriage, he has yet to go off on his own to pick out and purchase a gift for me or anyone else. Most women, I'm sure, would feel slighted by this peculiarity exhibited by their better half; but for me, I suppose I have grown to know my man so well, that it has become an acceptable way of life and I'm happy with it.
However, I try once again to explain the gist of Valentine's Day to my one true sweetheart', knowing that I will inevitably have it to do over again next year.
Although we love our husbands, wives, girlfriends, boyfriends, or significant others every day of the year, we probably all enjoy this special day set aside to show that someone special just how truly special they are to us-hence, Valentine's Day. Hugs, kisses, hearts, flowers, candy-or even diamonds-it's all part of saying I Love You' with a little more flair than, say, just because it's Monday or Wednesday.
So don't let the Scrooge of Valentine's Day put a damper on your feelings, go all out and shower that number one in your life with all the goodies you can carry home because, if they weren't there tomorrow, you may have missed something wonderful.
Happy Valentine' Day to you all and here are a few hugs and kisses coming your way!

Hi Sandra. An interesting article and I can relate to it. Only thing, I'm like your husband. I am definitely not one who goes ga-ga over a holiday, any of them. Others are welcome to do their thing, but I only see large organizations taking hard earned money from many who cannot afford it.
Back in the 50's when we were newly weds, I never failed to buy her the prettiest valentine box of candy that I could find. Then I ate most of the candy. She hang the pretty boxes on our bedroom walls until there was no more room. But she loved me whether or not I bought the candy and I loved her also. When the honeymoon is over, it doesn't mean that sincere love is gone. You and your husband come across as wonderful people. God bless and have a wonderful day tomorrow. Respond to this comment

Hi Sandra, what a sweet story-thanks for sharing. My husband doesn't buy me flowers or candy for valentine's day or anyday for that matter, seems in the past that everytime he did, I ended up sick and in the hospital before i could enjoy them-I think he thought it was his fault, but I do have to say, I haven't been in the hospital since the last time he bought me flowers...hmm!
Happy Valentine's day right back to ya! Teresa Respond to this comment
