This year, America is setting precedents which will have far reaching affects into the future of our country.

In this election, we have a woman and a person of "color" running for the office of President. Something fifty years ago would have been unheard of.

If you have ever been to an old cemetery and looked at the gravestones of women, they all say "wife of, sister of, daughter of." Never do they give just the woman's name. By labeling her wife, sister, daughter of, it stated that she was dependant on a male to take care of her.

With the campaigning of Senator Hillary Clinton for president, we have turned the corner. It was the wars of the 20 th century which allowed women to work, but as soon as the men returned home, they were suppose to return home, and be happy as a homemaker, wife and mother, and I'm sure many were, but I'm also sure that many others would have loved to keep their jobs and independence.

We all have dreams, hopes and aspirations. I can't answer for all women, but I certainly know I do, and I don't want to stand in the shadow of any person. I would like to make my own shadow, even if it's the size of a pinhead. And, I would like to think a lot of women feel that way.

Senator Clinton is a wife, mother and Senator. Like Secretary of State Rice, she is setting an example for the young girls out there. They are showing that glass ceiling can be broken, that woman are just as capable as our male counter parts, and that the PMS that men, and women, joke about does not stop you from rising to the top of your profession.

Other countries such as India and Israel have already elected women as head of state. As a supposedly progressive country, I have to ask what took us so long.

With Senator Barack Obama, we as Americans are showing the world that we are rising above the past issues of slavey and Jim Crow. Senator Obama exemplifies America . This country was made great by Whites from England and Europe looking for a better way of life and Blacks brought here against their wills. Senator Obama, with his mixed heritage, bridges the two worlds.

It shows the world that even though we may still have internal problems, we are now beginning to bridge our color issues. We are showing the world that when the Declaration of Independence says "All men are created equal" we are in fact beginning to practice what we have said for the last two centuries. What has happened in the past will always be there. Injustices to majorities are have been practiced, but there have also been injustices to others such as the Irish and the Eastern European Jews.

I can not claim that everyone feels or will feel this way; there are proponents, on both sides, who don't want to give up their old ways of thought, for it is a crutch to lean upon. But America is slowly but surely making changes, and those changes are for the better. It shows the world that we are practicing what we preach.

When election time rolls around, I sincerely hope the majority, if not all voters go to the polls and vote. It doesn't matter if you are a Democrat, Republican, Independent or Socialist, unprecedented changes will be made in our next election. Get out and vote, be a part of the renewal of the American Dream and GOD bless America .

Michele, a very good article and yes you hit it on the head that we are at the crossroads. Yes but for an entirely differnt how is this renewal going to take place? By nature of the very same people Mr. Obama addresses "as that Washington crowd", Kennedy, his mentor, Pelosi, Feinstein, Graham, Marteniz, Biden, Reid, and on and on and on are we to believe they will suddenly be born again? By what manner? Will it be at the hands of Mr. Obama's leadership, his words, just what? Yes, I have to agree with him and his opinion which he voices daily to all who will hear, this same tired, unchanging, do nothing to little bunch who gave us what we are dealing with. Sorry, just how do people really believe that without changing Congress they will suddenly have change? No Michele in my opinion it is not in the oratory skills, the use of words, the inflection or timing or the words of others but in the deeds. So let me ask you this. If Obama or any of them for that matter are such powrful leaders, where have they been? Why did they allow us to get to where we are? No excuse they can either lead or not, where were they or did they agree and consort? Do you really know who and what they are and stand for, what they do and failed to do, or is it that you just like him and he is black and it could be history? Before you may question, like you Michele the same circumstances. However, this election is more historical then many even know. While I respect your opinion I do feel it warrents further examination. So convince me where he has shown leadership and how he will change this bunch? Perhaps you can write to that? Really, with all best wishes for a good job. We just differ in opinion as do many.

First, may I say Thank you for the rating.

Now, down to the important matter.

We are where we are due to us, the American Public. For years we have re-elected the same politicians over & over, or did not go out and vote.

My personal thoughts was that being a representative of the people was NOT suppose to be a full time job, whereby the taxpayers were still paying for your benefits (which they can't afford) long after you left your seat. Nor was it to be a family job.

Without changing Congress and the House of Representative, whomever becomes President is still dealing with the same ole retoric, the same policies that have been going on for the past 40-50 years.

Americans have become use to the government taking care of them. What happened to the days when we ourselves took care of ourself? Today people depend on the government for housing, food, medical care, and money in their pocket.

And now I have to push 1 to speak my native language...English. And that is an column all it's own.

Instead of keeping jobs here, paying the American worker, we now "out source" everything. We want fruit in the middle of winter, so we import from South America, manufacturers want a higher gross profit, we send our clothing manufacturing plant to 3rd world countries.

And what do we get back? Slip shod, dangerous, cheap and poorly made items. The American workers and farmers made this country great and fed the rest of the world. What happened to us?

Change has to come from somewhere, and if oratory gets people off the couch, turns off the tube, cumputer or game and gets them out to vote, that that change has occurred.

I'm sure Mrs. Clinton has many years of experience, we are seeing the same people that was in her husbands cabinet. And unfortunately if Obama wins we will, in all probability see the same faces, as we will should McCann win.

I thoughts were to try to get people to understand that we do need change. That the only way we can achieve this change is to get up, get out and vote.
