Many car rental services feature promotional discounts and coupons to increase business volume. These discounted rates have created a unique Internet subculture. Today, a variety of travel sites freely discuss and exchange discount codes and promotional rates to assist travelers to rent a car at the most affordable rates.

Nearly every organization that employs more than 100 individuals is eligible for or offers some type of discount. Individuals who are employed by a government organization, well-known retailer, technological company, chain of fast food restaurants, manufacturing company, and janitorial companies probably can receive some type of discount. Furthermore, many of the company codes feature added services in addition to these discounts on pricing.

A few of the biggest organizations have added other perks to be negotiated into the rental price. Certain rental companies, such as Hertz or Avis, provide special business rates, and often compete against one another to do business with a certain company. Some companies offer these businesses promotions such as free fuel fill-ups, waiving of one-way fees, or insurance at no additional cost, and even offer to upgrade businesses into corporate discount contracts in return for agreeing to business deals lasting multiple years. Frequently persons employed by these companies will qualify for the discount by simply presenting a work badge, regardless of length of time employed or whether travel is a required aspect of their jobs.

Keep in mind that using certain discount codes without the appropriate credentials will cause you to be in violation of some rental agreements; however, other discounts are available to anyone who is a member of a given organization or group. Some of these groups include members of Costco, Citibank credit card users, Sam's Club, holders of GEICO insurance, and even persons who purchase Entertainment Books. These books offer some tempting coupons, plus, in some cases, corporate discounts. Some of the coupons that are known to be available include extra free days on weekends, free fuel fill-ups, money off of weeklong rentals, and a free upgrade to the next highest car class.

Before starting your travel planning, determine what discounts are available by checking with the car rental company. After locating some potentially useful codes, attempt to obtain a rate quote for each. The percent of discount you receive from any given code will vary by car, weekday, location, and season. It is important to use due diligence to search for travel deals. Spending an hour researching car rental or hotel discounts might save you a significant amount of money - hundreds or even thousands of dollars, depending on the length of the trip and the number of persons and vehicles that are involved.

Consider that the harder you search, the greater chance you have of locating a rate that works for you not only on a single trip, but on all your trips.
