Once again today, I mistakenly read an article about how 9/11 was an inside job. How the "evil" President Bush knew all about it and let it happen to serve his purpose.

Remember the last great conspiracy theory ? Who "really" shot JFK ? It's been over 40 years and there are still some that believe it was either the CIA, or Castro, or the mafia. I've even heard the one about , it was Lady Bird Johnson that had him killed.

So why do people believe these theories ? I've noticed they are an industry. Some actually make good money spreading these thoughts through society. Others simply use them to solidify their hatred towards an individual or group.

One "theory" is that the average typical human cannot except that a catastrophic event, such as the two I mentioned, could possibly be as simple as it appears.

One man takes one rifle and shoots one President ....no way. It must be deeper than that. That would be too mind boggling. Imagine there was no film of the incident, there would have been some that added, aliens did it.

So how could 19 Islamic freaks pull off such a devastating event as 9/11 ? but there was proof that the government intercepted messages stating they were going to attempt it. Oh, forget the fact that over 27,000 such messages were heard that week, claiming....well 27,000 different plans of attack. They should have known. They should have stopped it.

The really cool thing about conspiracy theories, is they are so similar to Multi-level marketing strategies. They have a built in rebuttal for anyone against them. If your one of the 8 million Americans that have at some point dabbled in MLM you know what I'm talking about.

They all tell you, if someone tries to tell you different, they are dream-stealer's. They just want to keep you from the truth. Yeah...right. They just want to keep you from finding out, that out of that 8 million, only 1000 really make any money.

Same with conspiracies, if anyone disagrees, they just don't want to accept the "truth." Or maybe they are part of the conspiracy ? I guess there will always be people that insist on complicated answers to major events. It's human-nature.

Wonder what's next ? No matter how ridicules it is, I bet it's a big one.

I love conspiracy theories, but I am the starter of them not the follower.

Example:
I have noticed that when we get fog in the Uk, I get a white residue on my car, takes some cleaning to remove it. What's in the fog, is it even real fog? Consider the great fog of a couple of years ago when it covered the whole of the Uk for 3 days! I drove 200 miles in it and had to clean my windscreen constantly....because of the mysterious white residue..

I shall begin the 'what's in the fog' conspiracy shortly. I doubt it'll be abig 'un, but you may add it to your list of crazies. :)

So Leah, your the one that starts some of these .....Hhmm, bad girl. Oh , I did some checking and uncovered the mystery of your "white fog." As it turned out Dear, you were simply driving directly behind the Stones' tour bus.
Thank you for your comments

Oh Terry, I think perhaps you misunderstood. The title is "why WE love conspiracy theories" but I believe the body of the article shows how stupid they really are. I'm with you on the fact that those who buy in to these crazy theories are , well.....dumb as a bag of hammers.

Did you hear the one about ..........;)

You know while some conspiracy theories are a little out there (not mine of course) believing everything you read and hear is also crazy.

Leah, you are such a bad girl ( did you hear the one about...:) I agree that believing everything you hear and read is a bit crazy as you say. I was once told that the first thing to do when evaluating information of any kind, was to find out who said it and why ? Could it be backed up by verifiable facts ?

I would guess that is what spurred the phrase " consider the source" I must say the one thing that intrigues me about the whole idea of a conspiracy is that, to actually have a really good one, it would have to be so well hidden that no one would ever know.

I think there are many unturths that a good many reliable people do know about and can support but they are generally silenced or shouted over.

I once did some random research into Aids and HIV (after reading about a conspiracy theory relating to them) and it happened that there were some very emminent leaders (reputable scientists) in the field supporting and fronting the conspiracy theory.

Who to believe is not so easy when money dictates what many people will say.

I myself just try to remain open minded and tend not to take anything at face value, that includes both the presented 'facts' and the conspiracy theories.

Money talks..

So true, Who to believe is not so easy when money dictates what many people will say. Thinking back, I once found myself at a table of outstanding Dr's discussing the subject of Dr. So-and so endorsing a particular product.

The conversation was beginning to get a bit heated when one of them pointed out that the tobacco industry had no problem getting over 100 Doctors to swear on a stack of bibles that cigarette smoke wasn't harmful.

So yes, unfortunately for far to many people ....money talks.
