As a fledgling guitar player growing up in the "sex, drugs, and rock & roll" era of the 60's and 70's, music was everything to me. Like every generation, I thought ours was the best, that's just human nature.
I formed the opinion many years ago that to criticize the music of any generation, was to criticize the people themselves. It was "their" music. Something that differentiated them from all others before them. They "owned" their music.
Now, as we get older and wiser, we learn to expand our thinking to encompass a wider variety of tastes, music being one of them.
Which brings us to today. My son is 18 and though he has a huge selection to choose from, he primarily likes hip-hop or rap ( honestly, I don't know the difference.) When he first started listening to it, I gotta tell you, I was a bit concerned.
You know, the "n" "g" "b" "c" "h" words. ( Sidenote: I think we'll know when we're at the end of days when every letter of the alphabet represents a word we shouldn't say.) But I never criticized him for liking it. Though I had to laugh one day when I caught myself yelling, "Turn that $hit Down" he managed to turn me into my Mother.
My boy calls me up one day and says, "Hey Dad I want you to listen to something cool, I think you'll like it." My son is in the Army and I've asked the Lord to give me a sign that he's alright. I believe this is how he answered. Below are the lyrics to the song Jimi wanted me to hear. I listened to it on youtube while I read the words.
Lord Give Me A Sign
[Intro:] Yeah..Uh In the name of Jesus (thats right) No weapon formed against me shall prosper (preach) And every tongue that shall rise against thee in judgment thou shalt condemn (preach) (Lord give me a sign) For this is the heritage of the servants of the Lord (preach) and their righteousness is of me, saith the Lord. (preach) Amen
[Verse 1] Lord Give me a Sign! I really need to talk to you Lord Since the last time we talked the walk has been hard Now I know you haven't left me But I feel like im alone Im a big boy now but im still not grown And I'm still goin threw it Pain and the hurt Soaking up trouble like rain in the dirt And I know! [Hook:] Let me know whats on your mind Let me know what im gone find Its all the time Show me how to teach the mind Show me how to reach the blind Lord give me a sign!
Show me what I gots to do To bring me closer to you Cuz im gonna go through What ever you want me to Just let me know what to do Lord give me a sign!
[Verse 2:] Please show me sometin Im tired of talkin to him Knowin he frontin Cryin bout life ain't nuttin But you either be the one mad cuz you trapped, or the one huntin Trapped in your own mind waitin on the Lord Or huntin wit the word that cuts like a sword The spoken word is stronger than the strongest man Carries the whole world like the strongest hand Through the trials and tribulations you neva let us down JESUS! I know your here with us now JESUS! I know your still wit us now Keep it real wit us now I wanna feel show me how Let me take your hand, guide me Ill walk slow but stay right beside me Devil's tryna find me Hide me, hold up I take that back Protect me and give me the strength to fight back!
[Verse 3:] Life or death Live or die I will never live a lie Im goin there cuz I try I won't quit until I die Im gone make it wrong or right Make it through the darkest night When the morning comes you'll see All I have is God in me (Lord give me a sign!)
[Outro:] No weapon formed against me shall prosper For this is the heritage of the servants of the Lord In the name of jesus Lord give me a sign Amen

Thank You Dear, I wasn't sure who, if any, would be interested in this article. I've been concerned with how many young people I've met recently that have absolutely no interest in Jesus what-so-ever.
I was just glad to see, even this "Rap Star" reaches out to them. He may also have songs that are , well....crude, I have no idea. But I really like this one.
Thanks Again

It is sad but true, fewer and fewer teens - Jesus did talk about an unsaveable generation - hearts growing cold. Rap, isn't my favorite either, but if it speaks to a young generation in a positive way, then praise God! Pray, pray, pray. :-) Respond to this comment
