Just who are those hooligans, that are up to those shenanigans on Saint Patrick's Day?
That's right, running about, playing tricks. And that would be the Leprechauns, they'll say. Reading can be great fun with your kids, and when reading stories about Leprechauns, it brings them to the enchanting world of Irish Tradition, and what better way to spend Saint Patrick's Day, than having a lovely little story to read.. all about Leprechauns.
I have some very good links for you, mostly at Amazon, with the most popular titles of the stories written about Leprechauns, and Saint Patrick's Day. With my all time favourite, listed on the final line. These stories are also great for preschoolers, the text is easy for them to identify, and the pictures will keep their attention while they listen to the story.
Hope you enjoy.
Clever Tom and the Leprechaun Tom is a clever boy who catches a Leprechaun in a trap, in a field of boliauns, which are yellow flowers. The Leprechaun tells Tom where the pot o'gold is buried, and Tom marks the spot with a a red garter. When Tom returns with his spade to dig up the pot'o gold, the field is full of red boliauns, mixed in with the field of yellow flowers. This story is beautifully illustrated, and a great read for kids.
Jack, while visiting his cousin in Ireland is curious when he hears the tale of catching a Leprechaun, and is determined to catch one for himself. He has a most eventful day, and learns a lesson when it come to catching Leprechauns.
A little lazy girl, and her and her poor grandmother meet a Leprechaun. This is a great children's story that teaches the kids an important lesson about life.
Meg and Sean go to their great-aunts house for Saint Patrick's Day weekend, determined to catch a Leprechaun, who lives beneath the thornbush in her garden. When they trap him, they make him promise to return to them every year, and answer one question. This a is great children's story book, with good Irish humor, and excellent Irish sayings.
This isn't a story book, but a really cute site packed full of stories about Leprechauns. It's worth looking up, and loads of fun to read. They have little Leprechaun Songs, and lots of cute little stories.
Saving the best for last. I truly believe this to be the best Saint Patrick's Day book. This one is a soo cute, and so well told, and really brings you back, or to, Ireland.
This story is about a little boy in Ireland, Jamie, the youngest in a huge family. Jamie wakes up early on Saint Patrick's Day, and is determined to prove his family wrong. You see, he isn't allowed to join in the Saint Patrick's Day March, which all the villagers traditionally do. They march up the grand Acorn Hill, and it's too far a walk for the smaller ones, so it's a tradition you need to grow into. With his trusty dog Nel, and his tin whistle, Jamie sets off, and by the end of the day many surprises bestow on his family. Jamie even surprises himself.
* Amazon.com is a great site for looking up, and buying new and used books. If you are looking for more Leprechaun stories, or Saint Patrick's Day books, all you need to do is check the bottom list, and they'll show you more.

May those who love us, love us. And those who don't love us, May God turn their hearts; And if He doesn't turn their hearts, May He turn their ankles, So we will know them by their limping.
