Service is terrible, food awful, rooms noisy and dusty...but I have been traveling to Tulum for more than 10 years, a happy pilgrimage south to escape the bitter cold and howling winds of New York's winter. And every year like a loyal Labrador pup I have stayed at Zamas Mexico Hotel, once Mecca to the famous, the fashionistas, and the families of those smugly in the know.
But the once happy, healthy and chilled out vibe of Zamas Mexico Hotel has been subtly changing over the last year and two, and this year I am sad to say, Zamas Mexico Hotel is in full and complete decline.
The noise and the dust and danger afforded from the highway splitting Zamas Hotel down the middle is too much to bear. Huge dump trucks spew their diesel fumes from 6 in the morning and there is no escape. All day the dust from the washed out dirt road is thrown up to form a thin layer of sticky dust covering bedding, furniture and clothes. It is inescapable.
The restaurant which was once great, now feels like a bus stop for all the charter coaches that fill the Riviera Maya from Cancun to Tulum. Once charming and chic it is now like a fast food franchise worst nightmare. The food is often inedible, and I even had a cockroach served fresh on my pasta! The proprietor of Zamas in Tulum, Daniel, is believed responsible for the decline (should I say death throes?) of his once sparking establishment, and totters around in a tequila fueled haze slurring and touching and blathering on incomprehensibly.
And it seems his sewage system at Zamas can't cope either. Just wander to the back past the grimy kitchen and take a whiff. I assume there must be laws against environmental pollution from 200 humans pouring untreated waste into holding pits?
Meanwhile there are may cute little places that have sprung up along the beach to take the place of this necrotic hotel corpse. Try the tapas at Luna Maya, or the home cooking at Treceleunas. Down the beach Casa Violetta and Ocho are fun and clean (not a cockroach or drunken innkeeper in sight!).
Tulum is still very special, but sadly I would steer very clear of Zamas Hotel, and go exploring for the new and the chic.

I agree. I have visited this place as well as several other places in the area and it clearly has serious issues. Respond to this comment
