Has The Vatican upped the stakes on your ticket to heaven? Did they create The New Seven Deadly Sins? The truthful answer is, No!
Then the question is, 'Is it a hoax?'
The Vatican Church must be watching this latest outbreak about the Church with wide eyes, scratchy heads, and an open mind. And no doubt they are wondering, is the public trying to tell us something?
Maybe everyone knows there are new sins, and want the Church to update?
Maybe everyone is jumping all over this topic because of a guilty conscious?
For those of you who have been fooled by the outbreak of news flashes about the Seven Deadly Sins, suddenly being changed, to the Seven Deadly Modern Sins, and you might be facing damnation, you can relax. The media blew it out of proportion, and although it's not an intended hoax, it's a cross between a hoax and a bad case of misinformation all the same.
It was another one of those incidents where Internet Media pulled a peruana attack on a simple interview with a Bishop, and all the facts were blown out of proportion. This is not an uncommon occurrence with News Media, the race to get the story out first has more competition than ever before with Self Appointed News Hounds on hundreds of thousands of News Sites and Blogs.
The Bishop apparently had much disappointment in the media for blasting and misinterpreting his interview in L'Osservatore Romano. He felt that it only proved that the modern world truly doesn't understand the nature of sin. With the frenzied coverage of his interview, the mass media, although unintentionally, undermined his point.
Sadly, that's what happens when gossip spreads, the facts get screwed up, and everyone believes what they hear, and repeat it in their own articles without proper research to back it up.
What Bishop Girotti had intended to get across as a message, was that Catholics need to re-explore their moralities, to have a sense of sin, and make use of the confession booths to clear them free from the sin, and their offenses.
In the release of the L'Osservatore Romano publishing, Bishop Girotti hadn't anticipated such a travesty, and the unforseen media reinventing the Vatican's New List on The Seven Deadly Sins. I have a link at the base of this article, with the interview translated into English.
Before we get to what really happened, let's explore a little background info.
The Vatican Church has been publishing the L'Osservatore Romano since the 1800's and now it's online. In their March addition, March 9th 2008, they had published an interview with Gianfranco Girotti. Now he is a bishop who is a member of the Vatican's Supreme Tribunal of the Apostolic Penitentiary. During this interview Girotti discussed the ‘New Forms Of Social Sin,' explaining new sins such as genetic manipulation and drug trafficking. Girotti wouldn't have initiated any new laws,
Number One. It would HAVE to be approved the 'POPE'!
Number Two. Although Gianfranco Girotti is a number-two official at the Tribunal, he is in the mid-level of the Vatican's bureaucracy, and is in no position to make any official decisions on behalf of the Catholic Church.
In keeping with modern times, Gianfranco Girotti has brought up some excellent points.
As in truth, Man is it's own greatest Enemy. Man is destructive by nature, and advances without cause or concern to the Environment. And with the progression of the Human Race, Rules do need to be applied and followed.
But as it sits. Officially, the rules haven't been updated since I believe it was the 16th Century.
What are the original Deadly Seven Sins?

What are the misinterpreted. ‘New Deadly Seven Sins?'
Taking into account the fact that scientists are dabbling with cloning, that the world has suffered greatly with outbreaks of war, with countless innocent people suffering in the background. That poverty is becoming more common, and wealth is being achieved in ridiculous amounts. The Vatican maybe should decide to add these to the list.
Here's the list of the Supposed New 'Deadly Seven Sins'.
Genetic Modifications
Experiments on Humans
Obscene Wealth
Polluting Environment
Social Injustice

During my research the best link I came across was a pdf file, a translation by Istituto Acton, Rome of the Interview.
The Acton Institute's office in Rome has provided an English translation of Bishop Gianfranco Girotti's interview. In it, the bishop has his own criticism for the media. "It is necessary also to denounce the emphasis given to the media that on a daily basis casts discredit on the Church."
Action Institutes Office. The original Interview that has everybody talking.
If you want the "Real Story', of sin, and the Vatican teaches, maybe you should do as I did, and go directly to the source, the Vatican's Official Website.
Here are a few of the Vatican's Pages, on the Holy See's Website, that are all about Sin, with news straight from the mouth of the Pope.
The Vatican's Archive on Sin, with quotes from the Bible.
1857 For a sin to be mortal, three conditions must together be met: "Mortal sin is sin whose object is grave matter and which is also committed with full knowledge and deliberate consent."
Message of His Holiness, Pope Benedict XVI, For the celebration of the World Day Of Peace, 1 January 2008
There really is no down side to what has happened in the press. It has proved to the Church that people care enough about sinning, and having a clean slate, to write about it. It has people everywhere talking about it. They are all looking to the Church to do something about it.
Was it a blessing in disguise?
Nobody knows.
There are many lessons to be learned in this article. Don't always believe everything you read, and do your research before you believe it.
I almost fell for it to, I heard about it on David Letterman. But I went straight to the sources before I wrote it, as I have learned my lesson in the past, that just because it's blasted news, doesn't mean it's true. It can happen to any of us when it comes to online writing, no one is perfect. But we all need to slow down, read carefully, pay attention to detail, and do your research as best you can before the gossip leaves your desk.
