Truck bed mats are not a waste of money if you want to keep your truck looking good.  Use your truck for hauling and unless you're very careful a shiny new bed can quickly turn to a rust bucket.  Scratch that bed to bare metal and here comes the rust.  And a work truck that's used hard can quickly pick up big dents and dings that lead to an early demise. So is it possible to really use your truck and still keep it looking good?

A popular choice to protect your truck bed is a spray on bed liner.  The bed liners are attractive, tough, permanent protection for your bed.  But do you want a permanent coating?  Or maybe you want  something with more padding or less cost.  Maybe you even want some protection for that expensive spray on liner.

In many cases a truck bed mat may be just the thing to protect your bed, or even to cover existing damage.  Bed mats come in a variety of types and variations.  Your main material choices are carpet and rubber. Which is best?

Truck Bed Carpet Liners

Especially if your truck bed has a cover, either a tonneau cover or a topper, a carpet liner is great.  Most carpet liners are weatherproof, but a wet liner may hold moisture on the bed leading to rust.   A carpet covering is a non-skid surface and that may be just what your hauling requires.  Also carpeting is perfect for cushioning big, messy hauling jobs.  Some mats are reversible too so you get two sides to use.

On the other extreme, you can pick a custom made carpet lining that covers bottom and sides of the bed with luxury carpet.  You wouldn't want a luxury carpet liner for messy loads but for more casual hauling and recreational use.

Rubber Bed Liners

For really nasty hauling projects, rubber mats are virtually indestructible.  Rubber mats are also weatherproof, unbreakable and shock absorbing.  Bashing and pounding a rubber mat are not a problem.  Plus you get some road noise muffling with the bed protection.

For low cost choose a trim-to-fit universal mat.  That will be your cheapest choice.  Custom mats are available for most trucks also.  Another option is a custom fit multi-piece liner that includes a rubber floor mat plus snap in side pieces to cover the whole bed.

Whatever your choice, truck bed mats are a great option to protect your old or new truck.
