I was so excited when I heard the news that I was having a girl. Three years later I just sit in awe as I realize the ramifications of that news.

See, I have come to realize that girls are born with a manipulative gene. Who would have ever thought that? I, for one, believe the gene skipped my generation so I never saw it coming. I, of course, am the victim in this story.

It started out innocent enough with her batting her eyes at her daddy to stay out of trouble at a very young age. However, today I had a vision. A vision of Eve standing in the Garden of Eden. After all, Eve was the first manipulator and my daughter can reenact the story like a professional actress on Broadway.

It started this morning-the day after Easter. I hear her arguing with my husband as we try to steal a few extra moments of sleep since we both have the day off of work.

"Can you open this candy," she asks.

"No candy this early in the morning," my husband mumbles.

"But d-a-d-d-y, can you p-l-e-a-s-e open this candy," she screams.

"No, Hannah-no candy before breakfast."

I listen as she stomps out of the room crying and whining. What seemed like two minutes later, I hear my daughter on my side of the bed.

"Mommy, open your eyes," she says in an innocent tone.

"Hannah, what? I reply groggily."

Open your eyes and look at my face. What do you see?" she says.

"I don't know-I see a cute girl," I reply. (yes, I was half asleep unaware of the manipulation going on.)

"Do you see any chocolate? Because I ate some candy and wiped my face all by myself," she says.

"I thought daddy said you couldn't have any candy," I say.

She ran out of the room. Unbelievable.

Fast-forward to ten minutes later and we see Eve in the flesh.

"I brought you a piece of candy," she said.

"Daddy said no candy before breakfast," I reply.

Then she proceeds to stick it in my face and with an annoying screaming whining tone I hear, "Eat it, Eat it!"

I, of course, respond how every good mom would respond.

"Why don't you go try that on your daddy? See if he wants it."

She runs out. I hear her in her sweetest voice try to offer her daddy the candy.

I think it was at that point that my husband reached his breaking point with her. I will leave the next conversation out, but it was a going back and forth of wills as he told her "no" and her switching back in forth from "please" and "why, daddy."

It was at that point I realized she is Eve in the flesh. I just kept seeing her trying to get people to eat the candy or what could have easily been the apple so she too could partake in the forbidden fruit, I mean candy.

She cared nothing about the consequences of disobedience. She only cared about the pleasure she would receive from that candy.

Isn't it funny how many years have passed, but at the core she is no different than Eve was in the garden? I can hear her telling Adam now, "Eat it, Eat it."

Girls! I will never fall for the sugar and spice line again!

Laura, I love it! My daughter was the same way. I just might have to share the time she talked me into spending $55 for multi-colored styrofoam - other wise know as "floam". The commercial said it was only $19.99 and to wait because there is more. Sucker was written all over my face. The sad part? She did this at 17 years old! All this to say, it just gets worse :-) Thanks for the laughs!! Teresa

Teresa-That isn't what I wanted to hear! Great tip on the floam-I will have to remember that! My daughter is a commercial magnet. I let her watch Dora every morning-that is her show. Everyday it is something new. One day she said, I want to go to the beach. I said maybe this summer. She said ok, I will need that baby i just saw that swims with you! Girls! Thanks so much for commenting with the depressing news that it doesn't get better! :)

Laura,
I've had two boys and one girl. Two boys together are half the trouble of one girl! I expected it to be the other way around! Enjoy the rest of your journey with your little Hannah - it's worth it. My daughter is 33 in May and a very close and delightful friend. You eventually have to step back with your boys, but you never have to with your girls. Have you heard the old saying: A son is a son 'til he takes a wife; a daughter is a daughter all of her life? lol
Great read. It certainly brought back memories!

Hannah-I love that name and that saying! :) I have a older boy as well and I look back and think this stage of his life was a breeze compared to her! I am glad I brought back some memories! Thanks so much for commenting!

This is cute, the way you related this. I am helping to raise my grandaughter, and she is now 8, and she still does this! and I am still working-on it.
