Key Verses: Matthew 8:16 When the even was come, they brought unto him many that were possessed with devils: and he cast out the spirits with his word, and healed all that were sick:

Mark 5:2 And when he was come out of the ship, immediately there met him out of the tombs a man with an unclean spirit, 3 Who had his dwelling among the tombs; and no man could bind him, no, not with chains: 4 Because that he had been often bound with fetters and chains, and the chains had been plucked asunder by him, and the fetters broken in pieces: neither could any man tame him. 5 And always, night and day, he was in the mountains, and in the tombs, crying, and cutting himself with stones.

There was a time when people were all to ready to accuse those who acted differently than they did of being demon-possessed. The Jewish leaders even accused Jesus himself of having a devil, or demon (John 8:48, and others). In medieval times, accusing someone of witchcraft, which was inspired by demons, sometimes a convenient pretext to rid oneself of enemies. In our times, though, most people dispute that there is any such thing as demons at all, and behavior once attributed to them is ascribed to mental illness, perhaps due to a chemical imbalance. If we believe the clear witness of scripture, though, demons are as real as bacteria or viruses or any other causes of human catastrophe.

Just because someone is being influenced by demons doesn't mean they are possessed by them. Demons can influence our thoughts and behavior from the outside, and Christians especially are subject to such attacks. Like their master, Satan, demons can suggest ideas and motives in an attempt to turn us away from God. Christ's temptation in the wilderness is the prime example of this. Also, the Devil can try to influence us through circumstances, or through the actions or words of others, as he did with Job. For those who don' t know Christ, he bends his effort to keep them away; for those who do, he tries to destroy their witness or render them powerless. A Christian cannot be demon-possessed, because our bodies are the temples of the Holy Spirit (1 Corinthians 6:19), and no demon can live in the presence of God's Spirit. It is possible, though, for a Christian to be so tormented by demons that they can appear to be possessed.

That still leaves the basic question. To be "possessed" by a demon means, literally, to be owned by one. The demon, or demons, control the mind, body, and emotions of the person they inhabit. If they so desire, they can cause the person to indulge in bizarre, self-destructive behavior, like the Gadarene demoniac, or the boy who was often cast into the fire (Mark 9:22).

Demon-possessed people have been known to perform prodigious acts of strength, & nbsp;or affect physical objects around them. There is one primary mark of demon possession, though, that never varies: no one who is demon possessed can praise Jesus Christ as Lord. Even many who are not possessed by demons can, and do, curse God, but these can also praise him with a lying voice. Unless it is in a sneering, mocking way, though, no demon-possessed person can give praise to God. If the person uses particularly vile ways of cursing God, they may well be possessed, but that is no guarantee. It is beyond the scope of this short article to discuss how demons can be cast out, but there are things they cannot endure: the name of Jesus, his shed blood, and anything or anyone that is holy. God gives his children discernment, and one of the things we can discern, or should be able to, is the presence of demons in another human being. There may be evidence in the eyes (often a reddish tint), or in behavior, or in speech. Dealing with such people is dangerous, and no one who is not spiritually qualified should take on a demon directly without specific guidance from the Lord. There are godly people with a particular ministry of deliverance, but all of us can pray, and, & nbsp;if the occasion demands it, fast as well. Some demons, Jesus said, will come out only in response to prayer and fasting. (Mark 9:29).

Demons look for weak spots. They can come into someone's life during a time of emotional or physical weakness or stress, or through a gateway opened by occult practices, such as Ouija boards, horoscopes, or fortune telling. We should never let ourselves be preoccupied by them, but neither should we pretend they don't exist. I firmly believe that some of history's great monsters, like Hitler and Saddam Hussein, were, or are, demon possessed. To deal with our enemy, we must know him.

i think i've been possessed for a long time, i'm 22 and ever since i was 16 i personaly witnessed a physical embodiment through a beam of moonlight through my bedroom window, curiosly and unafraid i reached out to it, and i could feel it attach into me as a feeling of cold and darkness filled myself and seemingly the room. ever since then i've now noticed that my life has changed for the better that i was severly anti-social and depressed and ultimately just felt like i wasn't myself . but i feel it again... just recently feelings of very strong selfishness and loathing for others and myself. this article has reminded me of my will to repent my evil spirit infection, thank you

ps. at first i totaly thought i was infact insane. but it got to the point where i was actualy institutionalised in a mental ward when i was 16. needless to say i was released because i guess i'm not crazy. overtime i began to regain a profound belief in God and the spirits of our universe. so yeah I can't believe i'm possessed, this is sucks.

This was really helpful and answered a few questions I was struggling with... I'm glad you pointed out the difference in actualy being posessed or just influenced and how you can definately tell they are posessed if they cannot worship Jesus at all or be around anything Holy without freaking out or being completey weird.

To say people like Hitler or Saddam were demon-possessed is to diminish their human responsibility for their actions.

If demons can take people over (or torment them sufficiently to control them) during times of "emotional or physical weakness or stress" then we cannot hold anyone responsible for their actions - it can always be claimed that it was the demon, not the person, that did it.

This is cowardly, and of course based on falsehood - demons do not literally exist.

Ouija boards, horoscopes and fortune telling have all failed to be supported by any credible evidence - testaments to human gullibility rather than gateways to any other-worldly darkness.

I think what they mean by this by hitler being demon possesed that once a person hits literaly rock bottom, the person could change some much from being verysmart like hitler was to being overtaken wth emotions or subcouncious desires not being met. but there not saying that yah thats why hitler should be able to be cleared or out of what he did, what he did was terrible and this is a example of how a demom can chage a person, not that demons willl be like, ok shes acting this way, shes a demon, its just saying how if it gets that bad, then thats how hitler was.

Thanks Gary for this article it cleared up some conflict I had about Christians that seem to be possessed. As for Ben, Jesus Himself in the scripture that Gary mentioned spoked directly to the demon in the persons. What should be the most glaring thing about the confrontations Jesus had was that the demon unquestionly obeyed the authority of Jesus.

Ben Morrish, it doesn't deminish their personal responsibility for their actions at all. It would have been their fault for living in a way that would invite the demon inside of them. Resulting in: still their fault.

A most interesting article that has cleared up some questions i had. God's blueprint (the Bible) tells us what to look out for. Those Who have eyes will see, those who have ears will hear. The problem with many is that the same demons they fail to believe exists is the same demons blinding them to the truth of Gods word and exactly what is happening in our world today. Hosea 4: 6 sums up the state of the majority of us today. Ignorance is the mountain hindering us from going further naturally and supernaturally.

Demons do exist, they will torture you. Demons will mock at you and bring up past things about you, often hurts things. (abuse, rape, violence, domestic things about you from past ) to remind you of them. They are evil and cant say anything good to you or about you. They have no love, respect and patience everything about them is hateful. They are miserable demons and they want you to very well be miserable. They try several ways to say hurtful things to you bring old things to your remembrance as though they are not the past. Be aware because they do exist be strong pray and know what they are and who you are in Christ. The are most time violent, verbally abusive, and they are to be manipulative. I was not aware up until now that they do exist in the physcial world. I am here to inform that they are indeed real. I heard about them and read about them and didnt understand how they exist and what are demons until i had a real encounter myselef. Until you encounter a demon possessed person you will know what a demon is. They are very unfriendly and can really make your life a living hell. You may have encountered a demon possessed person and didnt realize that was a demon. I just was reading this post and wanting to inform people they do exist. Unless you have experience then you really would believe they are real. I dont care what you hear about there are no demons on earth. Im sharing my story to tell you they exist unless you are demons possessed yourself. Because they normally try to block your mind from knowing the truth.

You wrote: "The Jewish leaders even accused Jesus himself of having a devil, or demon " It should be noted that only a few of the leaders were against Yeshua. At least half were for Him. Also most of the people were for Him as well and were planning on making Him their King. Otherwise, your article is sound.

the Bible clearly says that all sinners or demon possed rather they or religious are not!

all sinners are possed

Matthew 12:43

When the unclean spirit is gone out of a man, he walketh through dry places, seeking rest, and findeth none.

the demon Paul cast out was praising God,

Acts 16

17The same followed Paul and us, and cried, saying, These men are the servants of the most high God, which shew unto us the way of salvation.

there is clearly unclean spirit in all children that or disobeying God,

Ephesians 2:2

Wherein in time past ye walked according to the course of this world, according to the prince of the power of the air, the spirit that now worketh in the children of disobedience:

The true beauty of the New Testament, more than other beauties within His teachings, to me, is that Jesus seemed to be the only Jew in any religious writings to both be able to banish and to recognize the reality of demons.

It is most astonishing that most jewish texts make no mention of discorporate negative thought entities.

People troubled by demonic influences(much more common and insidious than most can imagine) can gain courage and even perhaps authority in some degree over such unseen evil in Jesus' name:Paul Schroeder

People, get real. All this crap is a consequence of man's unwillingness to accept that when you're dead, you're dead.

Why don't you get real? Your unwillingness to only accept what is clearly painted before your eyes is a problem that you and many other narrow minded individuals face. Every step of progress you make in your life is through faith. It's not a 100% guarentee to make a move to another state to work for a company who could very well lay you off the following week. You do it anyway because of blind faith (generic term of this is stock) in a simple idea that you know you should do this. Why not submit more of who you are to faith and the unknown and continue to grow as a person?
