I was watching an excellent documentary of the U.S.S. Enterprise and the battle for Guadalcanal.   There was a description of a fierce naval battle that lasted for many hours during the night.  While I was enjoying the story the narrator mentioned that when the sun rose there were Japanese and American soldiers/sailors floating in the water.  They were all from the many ships that were sunk the previous night.  The narrator said in a very calm voice that the U.S. Navy picked up the U.S. personnel and just machine gunned any "Japs" that were found alive.  As I heard that I thought, "My Gosh that is how to fight a war!"

At the risk of being deemed a sadist I must lament the situation our military has been put in time and time again.  I read about the young Marine who is on trial because he shot someone and will now spend the rest of his life in a military prison.  How sad we have become as a nation!  We take a young civilian and train him to kill.  We teach him all the essentials of combat and then give them rifles, tanks and more fire support ever deemed possible by mankind.  Then we handcuff them to a set of rules that are governed by a group of people who sit safely behind their plasma television.

I have a question to ask...If you went out to the mall and a person shot your best friend in the head would you not want revenge?  If your best friend had his head cut off would you not want revenge?  If your family was driving down the road and a bomb went off and killed your brother would you not want to get even?

Oh sure you could rationalize that they asked to be there and they need to accept it.  My response is that those young warriors are keeping the enemies of America from destroying our way of life.  If you believe that the world would just leave us alone you live the same delusion that Chamberlain did before Pearl Harbor. Much of the world wants America destroyed.  There were many cheers worldwide when the trade center went down.  You do remember the trade center?  The big buildings in New York City?

I am not a war lover by any chance, I abhor war actually.  I only wish that when you send the military to go fight a battle that you stop setting rules that only America follows.  If we need to unleash the dogs of war then we need to take the chains off and just let them kill anything in their path.  It does not matter what shrine they are in.  It does not matter how many children provide the shield.  If the enemy is there then they need to be destroyed.  Killing ten innocents is better than allowing one U.S. Solider to die.

Being in the military is similar to a family.  You train, live and work beside these people for years.  You train to become one cohesive unit.  If you have never been in the military you really have no clue as to how close this bond can become.  If you still disagree and hate what I have to say then I have a suggestion:  Why don't you go and book a flight to Israel?  When you get there I suggest you travel to some other nations ,go out on your own and meet some of the people you are so hell bent on protecting.  Chances are if you bring a Bible that alone is grounds for your beheading.  Imagine that...Your head cut clean off because they disapprove of the book you are carrying!!!

If you think the war is over oil then stop using your car and all oil products or you are a hypocrite.  It drives me crazy when I see a soccer mom with a bumper sticker of how she hates the war "for oil".  If you hate the war and blame it on oil then start walking.  Make sure your shoe have no petroleum byproducts in them.

I only wish that when the military is sent to destroy there be no cameras and minimal rules.  Just like when the United States was in World War II.  With all the tragedy of that war America lost less lives than almost any other nation.  Maybe that was because we fought to win.

hi mr. keith,
i am at a loss when it comes to war. why? because i know we need to protect ourselves, but i have a 17 year old and a 20 year old son, and it would kill me if they had to go to war, and probably kill them! i have neighbors on either side of me who went to Iraq, young boys, early twenties, who have so much garbage in their heads, they'll never be able to sleep at night without some type of sleeping aid. and yet, my ideas seem like a mere speck on the vast horizon.what was that song, "Why can't we all just get along?" maybe there's something to be said about that.
well written, interesting story told by someone who obviously knows firsthand from whence they speak! thank you.
best regards,
sue thom

Mr. Keith, I agree with your general premise. But I think there has to be a balance between fighting fair and fighting to win. What I mean is, I do believe our military is hamstrung by what some people consider proper. But I don't think the opposite extreme, our guys shooting everything in sight and sorting them out later, is the solution either.

Granted it is a difficult situation and if you take a moment...there is not anyone shooting at YOU or ME. Imagine how hard it would be if you had rockets being lobbed in on you? Then it relly would not matter to you or me.

That is one point that most miss. The rules are killing our soliders and those who set the rules are not there.

Thanks for the support!!!

During World War II we were one as a nation. I don't know what you would call us now. Very interesting article. Not many would have tackled this issue. Kimberly

We are still one nation, we are just not united by the democrats and the republicans. They no longer wnat what is best. The politicians today want power for the sake of power. We just need a real leader and we will be fine.

I don't believe advocating violence helps any situation. If the Americans had not killed Japanees naval personel and instead took good care of their prisoners, maybe more would have surrendered intead of fighting to the death causing more American casualities than necessary. Surrender was not an option for Japanees solders because Americans were going to kill them anyways.

You are so wrong on that response. You need to read up on WWII and the training the Japs received. They considered Americans less than human on a level less than a dog.

You sir have made a comment that shows ignorance to history. It was also a slap in the face to all the Americans that died for you and me.

Are you a liberal?

Good points, Mr. Keith. There are good and bad arguments for war. Like you I don't like war and wish it didn't need to happen. There are other solutions. Its up to us to make the powers that be on all sides to become aware of these solutions. These articles help, for they are available all over the world.
