The day couldn't get here fast enough. You know which day I am speaking of: Day one of vacation! You've planned and scheduled, shopped and packed; this is the year you finally get to relax.

Whether it's a weekend getaway or an extended trip to an exotic island, we all need a break and taking time away from the regular routine can provide more than pleasing scenery, it can offer us time to rest and recharge ourselves.

Are you mentally ready to travel but not sure your body will cooperate? Traveling with IBS can bring some concerns, but my tips for avoiding the possibility of an attack and coping should one occur, can help assure your vacation is as peaceful and restful as you hoped it would be.

Try these suggestions on your next travel adventure across the country or around the block:

1. Pack a snack bag for the car or plane ride:

- always carry nuts for munching

- place a low sugar/high fiber granola bar in your carry-on bag

- protein powder packets are a good alternative to carry as well

- a yummy wrap containing protein, healthy saturated fats and greens

- seven grain bread with almond butter and an apple or banana offers a quick and

healthy snack

2. Eating at fast food restaurants:

- stick with a salad (remember to choose a light dressing) or

- try having a sandwich on whole wheat bread

- be sure to stay away from fried foods and

- stay away from sugar snacks

- try to get a serving of vegetables as a snack

3. Remember these tips when dining out:

- always begin your meal with a salad

- select a protein-based entre over a pasta dish and

- order an extra side of vegetables for extra fiber

- always choose water over other beverages

- if you must have dessert, share it! A couple of bites can please your sweet tooth,

without having to devour the entire serving

- order a side dish of fresh fruit to accompany dessert. Doing so lets you believe

there is more food to eat

4. Eating at a friend's home:

- eat a small, but healthy, meal prior to going to visit.

- drink lots of water

- try taking a probiotic before you leave your house

- if they serve vegetables, have an extra serving of them

- have dried fruit available for a quick, sweet snack

5. If you have an IBS attack while traveling

- take 5-10 deep breaths

-drink a cup of peppermint tea

-try using a hot water bottle

-drink lots of water

-have broth-type soups

-avoid all alcohol, dairy, sugar and white flour

-try moving around to alleviate gas pockets; do some gentle stretches

Planning ahead for your travels will guarantee you are prepared for an IBS attack if it happens.

Relaxing your mind and your body while on vacation is good for your whole self. Following my suggestions can aide in that process.

Bon voyage!
