Is your computer becoming slower and slower and creaking up the weight of the many files you have? Or maybe your computer hasn't got the necessary protection to block all those nasty infections and hackers on the Internet? If so, what can you do about protecting and speeding up your computer, and without spending any cash?

Well, if you install all three of the programs I mention below then you will indeed give your computer a rather quick and very useful health check-up whilst ensuring that it has the ability to fight off most infections and block hackers trying to access your computer.

1 - CCleaner [formly known as Cr@pCleaner]

This program is absolutely brilliant. It will remove all of the temporary files that clog up your computer. It can also remove any traces of Internet activity, remove stubborn programs that don't advertise their un-install option and many other options. Best of all it's freeware and it does not contain any spyware or adware.

I've been using it for a while now and when you run it for the first time, you will be surprised how much junk it finds and removes. Your computer will run faster after using this program. Ensure you run this at least once/twice a month for best-continued results. This version is compatible with Internet Explorer, Firefox and Opera browsers. It can be used on Windows 98/NT4/ME/2000/XP/2003 & Vista.

2 - Lavasoft Adware 2007

Lavasoft's Ad-Aware 2007 is a freeware anti-spyware software that's available for home use only. The program includes includes skins, help manuals and the latest definition files. It's a very useful program to help remove spyware and adware. Unfortunately the real-time guard is only available on the paid for version.

This version is a much better program than the previous Ad-Aware SE, which was good, but did not catch most of the spyware and adware that had infected your computer. The freeware version of Ad-Aware 2007 is compatible with Microsoft Windows 2000, XP, and Vista. An ideal program to remove those annoying spyware files.

3 - Zone Alarm Firewall

You need a firewall on your computer. Without one, it's like leaving your front and back door unlocked in your house. Undesirables will get in and cause damage. The firewall included in Windows XP and Vista are poor. They are better than nothing, but use a good free program such as Zone Alarm and you will be able to help your computer battle the nasty files and hackers out there who want access to your computer.

All of the above are suggestions and if you have programs on your computer you're happy with, then keep them. If you don't, well download the ones above and see how much better your computer performs. Please enter the program name into a search engine to be able to find the most up to date link for downloading.

The three above programs are for home use only. They can be upgraded to unlock more options. In the free for home use state, the programs are more than adequate in helping you protect and speed up your computer for free.

Thanks for the tips. It is important for people to consider using these tools. Without protecting your computer from virus', spyware, and malicious intruders you run the risk of at best of having a slow computer and at worst a computer that doesn't work and your personal identity stolen.

Thanks Again

Hi Steven,

I couldn't agree more. Unfortunately lack of knowledge of simple steps to protect your computer causes many people huge problems.
