Since the dawn of mankind people have prayed to one thing or another, whether it was the sun, the moon, lightening, a volcano, or a big fat frog that showed up every time the weather got nice. Perhaps The Creator of all things instilled this basic human trait in us to prepare future generations with the understanding that there is a power much greater than us.
Of all the religions that encourage prayer it is the followers of Jesus Christ who believe He not only came to earth to show Himself but also died a horribly painful death for our sins. No other prophet worshiped by man ever rose from the dead as proof of an eternal life in Heaven. It is to Him that throughout time millions upon millions have prayed.
Prayers fall into two different categories if you will, we either pray for something whether it be for ourselves or for others, or we pray in thanks as a way of showing appreciation for what we have. Everyone that does pray has a certain method or system they like to use when doing so, be it something they were taught by their parents or instructed by a church leader or simply a personal way they prefer to "talk to God."
I remember hearing from someone many years ago that prayers were like little arrows being shot towards Heaven and some that may have been halfhearted or insincere fell short while others filled with strong belief and conviction got there fast and straight. Well of course no one knows the exact method that prayers do or don't work but that explaination does make sense.
The little story comparing a prayer to arrows flying skyward was the preamble of a suggestion on how to start each prayer. Whatever way you so decide to start your message to God is fine, I've found this particular way of beginning each prayer very fulfilling. Having said all that, here is what I believe to be the greatest prayer of all. Especially concidering how the world seems to be spinning out of control and away from all reason.
Dear Lord Jesus, God's only Son, who died on the cross for all our sins. It is through Him and Him alone we may enter into Heaven. Lord, I thank you for every gift I've ever received and for things I've yet to see. I don't ask for health or prosperity or for my children or parents. I don't ask for help through hard times or support when I'm weak. My prayer is that You return. I believe You will know when it's the perfect time. I can only pray, that time is now. Please Dear Lord Jesus come back. Amen

A well written article. I enjoyed reading until the end. I have this turn off about pray, but oddly enough I do believe in God.
God Bless,

Thank you Mr. Keith, and that's fine about not liking pray, absolutely fine. And I don't think it's odd that you feel that way yet believe in God. Makes perfect sense ....to me anyways.

I was raised in a religious family and attended a parochial school in my youth. However although I was taught to pray both at home and in school, I find it hard to do today. I believe rather than praying for someone just keeping them in our thoughts is a prayer all by itself. Respond to this comment

Hey David, when I was little mine would be to "ask" for things then as I got older they were more as a "thank you" now it is simply a plea .....I'm done playing now, I think we're all done playing .....it would be nice to go home. Respond to this comment
I realize that I didn't run across your article until four months later. I loved it! Amen brother. Jesus lives!!! Always did and always will. God bless you.
Thank You Michelle, So many say they believe ... then turn around and live like they're not so sure. I used to pray like most people FOR things, or people, or help. Then after a good strong look around I realized there really is only one important prayer. That Jesus returns...and it couldn't be a minute too soon. Respond to this comment
