It's called Catchphrase, and, quite honestly, stands to be one of the best family bonding games of all time. My fifteen-year old son introduced it to me this past weekend. Resultantly, we played for hours.
Remiss of a board, this electronic game brings back the laughter and fun in which families indulged in years ago, forming teams and inviting all ages to play. Convenient enough to take with you during travel (having a first hand accounting of that fact when delayed several hours in a Florida airport earlier this winter), Catchphrase is an experience well worth its value in dollars and time.
Watching my son team with my youngest daughter and then experiencing the bitter-sweet feelings of having my eldest daughter's and my "pants beaten off," couldn't have been more fun or satisfying. It certainly reminded me of the reason why I pay such inordinately high taxes. Apparently, my New Jersey tax dollars are being put to good use after all as my nine-year old can rapidly enact rather sophisticated clues to lead her brother to bridge two words and shout out the appropriate phrase in all of a few seconds. Who would have guessed this to be the case despite the prominent grades displayed on her papers each day.
It's wonderful when a family finds another, highly positive means in which to communicate. Sharing time is so crucial to the welfare of every participant, that to give it up for lack of direction, means, or a creative outlet robs everyone of happy times that eventually transform into warm memories. And, with the understanding that life changes so quickly, either through the course of normal evolution or unique circumstance, taking the opportunity to "play with your family" is better done sooner as oppose to later!
So, although I highly recommend Catchphrase, I recommend breaking out any board game available to you this weekend even more. Then round up your crew. They may hem and haw at the onset, but close your ears, and open your (and their) hearts and minds. They'll thank you for it afterwards.
GOLD star to any parent that follows up with bowls of ice cream. You're good for at least a week on that one!
