Drunk driving has been an issue for many years now and law enforcement takes this issue very seriously.  If police can smell alcohol on your breath, your chances of going to jail is very likely.  Here are some tips to help minimize that risk of a drunk driving charge:

1. Don't drink and drive to begin with! Of course this is the best way to prevent a drunk driving charge.

2. Be polite and on your best behavior in the presence of the police officers.  Know that they will be noting and recording your every move.  Anything you say or do can be used in court as evidence against you.  The last thing you want is for the officers to show a video of you acting out of control.

3. You are not obligated to perform any field sobriety tests (FST).  However, be polite if you choose to do these tests.  You may be arrested anyways, but at the very least the police won't have evidence to use against you.

4. Take advantage of the one call that police give you.  Call a family member or a friend after your arrest so that they can take note of your sobriety and state of mind.

5. Write down all details that happened about your arrest so that you can recall them easily during your trial.

6. Seek the help of a DUI defense lawyer who understands and has experience in drunk driving laws and procedures.
