Building a snowboard rail is not as difficult as it may seem. The main thing your going to need is a long narrow piece of metal railing. If you don't want to buy a railing you can probably find one at a junkyard.
Once you have your railing you need to pack some snow up on the side of it. So you have a soft landing, be certain that you pack snow on both sides of the railing. Grinding rails is more difficult to do with a big snowboard than with a smaller skateboard.
Did you know that snowboarders got the idea to grind rails from skateboarders. Yep, snowboarders saw how much fun the skateboarders were having and wanted to start grinding themselves.
Now that you know how to build your own snowboard rail, make sure to gain enough speed, you have a long wide open area. You'll fall if your going too slowly. But don't worry, just keep trying and eventually you'll get it right.

Good article, however, using rails came from skateboarders who learned to snowboard, who had already experienced the fun of jibbing, and decided to take their rail out and snowboard on it. Respond to this comment

this is a terrible article you need more than one piece of metal to build a rail. You need supports and skirting if you're making a box along w/ the fiberglass surfacing. And if you're going to say how to slide a rail, there is a lot more you could say, like how to balance, to turn 90 onto the rail if you're gonna do a boardslide, front or back, or just how to 50-50, nose press, or tail press. and i dont even snowboard Respond to this comment

This artile is terrible. I am a girl who is trying to build one in her back yard. What about the surface you need underneath the rail if you aren't practicing in the snow. I need to get a couple pieces of metal and weld them together, right! One at a slant to get some speed, then a long piece to boardslide on and base metal throughout for support. Dang.... I have an idea, but I need detailed information. Respond to this comment

A good thing to use as a rail is a old race ski. You can find them in ski store sometime for free. try to find long downhill ski. They are stiff and they are usually more them 180 cm. With a screwdriver unscrew the fixation. and drill the ski to a 2" X 4" piece of wood. You will slide on the p-tex base so drill the right side. Be sure to make a bigger hole in the p-tex so the screw head will be flat with the p-tex otherwise you willl scratch your board.
When you have the ski fix on the 2" x 4" unsharp the edge of the ski with a unsharp tool. Fix your rail with other pieces of wood the hight you want.
You can do two ski so you can built flat down.

Holy! this is the worst thing i have ever seen in my life! "get metal rail and pack snow around it" thx alot tips....
u wanna build a rail with a metal or wood support structer, not pack snow around it.
if ur building it out of all metal, u can weld it or build the support so the pipe will just sit in it
if ur building it out of a wood structure, drill holes through the pipe so screws can fit through and screw into the wood support. Respond to this comment

you guess are all stupid hes talking about a railing not a piece of metal it allready has supports you just have to put it in the ground and put snow on the sides your making it seem way harder then it is and for the kid that dosent snowboard you dont have any idea what your talking about fiberglass are you insane youd kill your self i think you were thinking of plexi glass but that stuff breaks really easily so dont use it and plus you dont put that on rails you put that on boxes ! but if you want to build a box go to home depot they have some really nice plastic stuff there! this artcle sucks!! if he knew any thing about building a rail he would go to a mountian and look. and if any one that is willing to go get a ski and drill holes in it is stupid. go buy a couple of pices of piping and some wood weled the pices of metel together and used the wood as a skirt.and one last thing don't pile snow around a pice of meatle. that is a disater wainting to happen.take the time to dig the holes in late summer and shove the pice of junk that he is talking about in the hole.and waite for snow.then again just go to a MOUNTIAN!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!! ha were all idots for even reading this far, what a bunch of whiney (did i spell that correctley)little girls . The best idea is to weld an arch shaped rail to a van with 1 foot pegs on the bottom of rail for the cleareance nedded then have some one pull you at 80 mph into on coming traffic. have fun Respond to this comment

ok
so im a snowboarder and i know that this article is bad.
u only need 1 pipe if yer acually making a hand rail. and the funnest way to do that is bend it and make it a acuall hand rail.
and if u want a skinny box u need fiberglass and you acually need support b.c a rail top just sitting on the snow is lame.
and even if u cant get a metal pipe
USE SOME PVC PIPE! it works just as good :D Respond to this comment
