We all know that drunk driving is dangerous and has serious consequences, but isn't it interesting that many of us still do it? According to National Highway Traffic Safety Administration there were 13,470 deaths related to drunk driving in the year 2006. People read these statistics and yet this problem of drunk driving still continues.
A night out having fun with friends and drinking is what many of us like to do after work or on the weekends. It's a normal scenario. However after too many drinks people tend to lose sight of what's right and wrong. There are nights when people drink and drive and somehow make it home safely. They think they're ok, but the next time they go out to drink, maybe they end up drinking more and because they were ok the last time they drove home after drinking, they believe that everything will be ok once again. However, next thing you know there's a major accident because of their carelessness and they seriously injure or even kill someone. It's a situation that's all too familiar for many people.
What most people don't think about is that drunk driving not only has an effect in the lives of people who are immediately involved in the accident, it affects those friends and family close to them. Also, think about the short-term effects of a drunk driving conviction which includes a driver's license suspension, spending time in jail, and the humiliation of being in court and having your name plastered all over the media. The effects in the long-run of a DUI charge could include a rise in insurance premiums, problems finding a job, plus the trauma and heartache for everyone involved.
So what is the best thing to do to prevent a drunk driving conviction? Well, the only sure way to not be charged is to simply not to get behind the wheel after you've been drinking! Before you head out to go drinking, designate someone to get you home safe. Make it a habit to do this and you won't end up being just another statistic. It's definitely not worth it.
